Solid scholarship from what I could tell. Lots of excerpts from journals and letters of Grant, his family and friends, and so on, so it feels pretty “straight from the horse’s mouth.” He’s also open about what it means to be writing the book post January 6, and explores a similar election crisis Grant weathered, framing it as the real test of whether the union could survive. I’d be curious what you think of it.

I'm pleasantly surprised that Baier at least seems to be intellectually honest about Grant. How is Baier's scholarship in the book? Is it well-researched and footnoted?
