A wonderfully heartfelt review, Kimber!

Jonathan K (Max Outlier) Glad it resonated deeply..and its of little surprise Everett received the Pulitzer for this ground breaking story. Hopefully you've read his others

It is a touching tale. I'm glad to see you gave it five stars, Jonathan. This was my first book by Everett, and it won't be my last.😊

Jonathan K (Max Outlier) Glad to hear that..he's one of very few authors that defies genre categorization and is willing to risk inserting himself as a character (I am Not Sidney Poitier). Able to write mystery, humor and stories like this shows he's in a class of his own. If you're open to other unusual stories, make sure to read Brian Doyle, though he's nothing like Everett

message 15: by Mark (new)

Mark Porton Oh dear, this does sound brutal. I have just finished Beloved which is set a little after this one, but even though it's harrowing, it's important to read about this dark period of history. Great review Kimber - I think I will read this one soon, thanks for the reminder 🤗🎈🦘

Terence M [Quot libros, quam breve tempus!] A fine review, Kimber! It's on my WTR shelf, but I am a bit on the fence - unsure if it's a book for me, or not.

Pia G. Beautifully said, Kimber! I recently read James and loved it just as much. Your review captured the emotional weight so well. When I finished it, I kept thinking that sometimes, to change a story, you don't need to rewrite the events - you just need to listen to who is actually speaking. Everett truly gives Jim his own voice, fears and courage back, and it's brilliant! ❤️

message 25: by Marialyce (new)

Marialyce I just could not get into this story, but I am so happy that you loved it, Kimber.

Karen Stunning review Kimber, and so beautifully stated. Sometimes reading books of historical fiction gives readers the opportunity to truly reflect on how much progress have we made today? Chilling, right? Thank you! ☺️
