Dirk Hy Roman, a rare review. In my opinion it’s a good ending for the series. You are right. The appendices are to much. I’ve never read all of them. Think you need to dig deeper into it to accept the power he put into the development of all of this.

Roman Kurys Ending was good, I agree. I just felt a bit of a let down since in my mind ending had already happened when they accomplished their mission but then there’s a bunch of what feels pretty arbitrary Shire squabbles going on for another 60 pages or so, but it may be because I was bored throughout the book that yet another mini adventure after the big deed was done felt like a chore.
Although, I fully acknowledge the work, and creativity that it took Tolkien to come up with this and basically spawn and popularize an entire genre that I love. That’s why I felt so bummed, I really wanted to like this. But the story telling just doesn’t feel compelling or interesting. The lore and the world and everything, obviously are top notch. It’s the story telling that I find boring with how slow it goes and how unnecessarily descriptive it is, how it feels like there should’ve been another trilogy before LOTR to introduce us to all the lore he’s just info dumping throughout, so to speak.
But he was, arguably, the first and so he paved the way for others after him to perfect it. It just hasn’t aged very well, but it’s a very solid castle foundation to me. I’m glad I read it.
