Good review. I am among the readers who gave up in Fallujah. Found the introduction of a new character more than halfway through the book more of a lifeline to the writer than an enrichment of the plo t. Poor Billy Summers, I liked him very much, but he was abandoned by his creator halfway through the book.
I was actually saying I was going to give up on it because I couldn’t see what could possibly happen to make it more interesting…and the next chapter I read Alice arrived. I stuck around for the end but wasn’t thrilled about it.
Oh geez I didn’t even catch the hotel reference. Maybe because I’ve only ever seen snatches of the movie and never read the book.
Also thought the ending was very creative, but yeah- lots of plodding along the way to get there. The first 3/4 of the book is super linear- no twists or surprises… it just felt like someone dictating action. Glad there was some payoff in the end though.
I got stuck for THREE WEEKS reading this book. Little did I know I was only a few pages before Alice came in. Still not that great though.
I LIKED it...I liked the characters, I like the ease of writing/reading, but exactly what you said--Lots to love; lots to meh. It was like 2 okay stories that couldn't stand on their own, so they became one. I didn't hate it, but meh...
