Patti and Deborah FAQs:

What are Buttons?
Buttons are our version of badges. It's basically a badge, but I prefer to think of them as buttons. For completing tasks and challenges you get rewarded with buttons.
If you would like a thread of your own to track your challenges and/or collect your buttons. Please ask for one here at Tracking & Collecting and I'll be happy to make you one.

Is Manga allowed?
Yes, as long as it is at 200 pages.

Can we use the articles a/an/the?
You can choose to either use or ignore these.

Gord This might seem like a silly question but I figured I'd check up front. Is manga fine? I'm assuming it would all just be lumped under graphic novels but it's best to double check instead of getting blind sided later.

Patti and Deborah Gord wrote: "This might seem like a silly question but I figured I'd check up front. Is manga fine? I'm assuming it would all just be lumped under graphic novels but it's best to double check instead of getting..."

Yes as long as it's at least 200 pages. I figure its similar to Manga but I'll update the general rules to include it.

message 5: by Gord (new)

Gord Thanks! Like I said I figured it would be fine but I've seen some odd rules around graphic novels and manga so I like to check up front as I read a lot that medium.

Amber J (Thereadingwitch) Sorry if I missed it. But I couldn't find anything on your rules for the articles a/an/the?

Patti and Deborah Amber J wrote: "Sorry if I missed it. But I couldn't find anything on your rules for the articles a/an/the?"

Another good question. I'm doing a lot of updating of our general guidelines today lol.
You choose if you wanna use or ignore them.

Patti and Deborah Reed wrote: "Are books 📚 that have 500 pages ok 👌🏻?"

Yes. absolutely

message 10: by Gord (new)

Gord I guess I'll chime in and be that guy. There will be a few questions here and I apologize in advance. I read a wide variety of stuff and I'm curious what I can and cannot use.

Are things like web novels/comics etc alright? I'm guessing that if I can find it on Goodreads and it meets the page count then it's good. If there is no page count on Goodreads, it happens, can I provide an outside source like an Amazon link?

I guess in extension to the above how about books with foreign titles? Can I use them for spelling challenges and if I can do I leave them in the foreign language or do they need an English title? I guess an example for that would be
俺んちに来た女騎士と田舎暮らしすることになった件
which translates to
Orenchi ni Kita Onna Kishi to Inakagurashi suru Koto ni Natta Ken

I know the page count is not long enough but say it was, could I use it?

Patti and Deborah You ask hard questions Gord lol.

I'm gonna say yes to webnovels/comics as long as there is a page count available and I think we will have the 200 pages min for those too.

Yes to the Amazon page count if there is no page count on GoodReads. I'll also accept Amazon's page count if you are reading the kindle version and it differs from GoodReads.

I am fine with Foreign titles and if you could just translate whatever part of it I need to know that would be great.

message 12: by Gord (new)

Gord Thanks for the response and sorry for the hard questions. I read from a wide spectrum of stuff and I'm thinking next year I want to get back to reading some more of that stuff again.

Patti and Deborah Gord wrote: "Thanks for the response and sorry for the hard questions. I read from a wide spectrum of stuff and I'm thinking next year I want to get back to reading some more of that stuff again."

No no, it's a good thing. These are things that I never would have thought of, and I'm sure you're not the only one who reads these. So it's a good thing.

message 14: by Red Really (new)

Red Really Reads Too Much What are your thoughts on Omnibus/Anthologies. If a book within the book is over 100 pages can it be used as a separate book for a challenge, or is it only the full Omnibus/Anthology that can be used? I've recently been reading quite a few of these.

ie: I'm reading Nothing Special Books 1 - 5 by A.E. Via and the five books within it are all over 100 pages separately. Can I use the books separately towards challenges - Embracing His Syn is book #2, and since I just finished it can I use it for 1km in the Skiing Challenge - or only the full Nothing Special Omnibus once I complete it??

Patti and Deborah Red Really wrote: "What are your thoughts on Omnibus/Anthologies. If a book within the book is over 100 pages can it be used as a separate book for a challenge, or is it only the full Omnibus/Anthology that can be us..."

For Anthologies/Short Stories. You need to use the edition of the book you read. So yes you would have to count the whole book as 1 book.

For books like one you mentioned above. Nothing Special Books. You can count each book as an individual book as long is it still meets the requirements and it has its own GoodReads book page for the individual book. In this if you are reading the set on kindle, you would use the kindle edition of each book.

message 16: by Gord (new)

Gord Just a thought in regards to the page count rule regarding manga/comics/etc.

There is so much stuff that I read that I can't use because of that page count requirement. Most comics fall in to the 120sih to 160ish page range and most manga falls into the 170ish to 190ish page range. Now I'm not suggesting that we change the page requirement but in one of my other groups we are allowed to double up books to meet that page requirement. It would have to be specific for this page requirement and both books would have to fill the task it's being used for. So if I'm using it for a spelling challenge both titles would have to start with that letter kind of idea. If it was a task like say "read a book set in Japan" both of the books used would have to be set in Japan. I wouldn't do more than two books together but it does give us some more options.

Just an idea and I'll leave it up to you.

Patti and Deborah Gord wrote: "Just a thought in regards to the page count rule regarding manga/comics/etc.

Umm. It's not a bad idea and I'll think on it. My main concern with it is that it might be a bit confusing for some people. I have been considering lowering the page count to like 150ish though. Which I may just go with that. It will make it easier for those like you who many read graphic novels/manga, without making anything to complicated. I'll get back to you on that after I've woken up more lol.

message 18: by Gord (new)

Gord That option also works. That opens up a whole lot more that I can use while keeping it simple.

Patti and Deborah I've lowered the page limit for graphic novels/comic/manga etc. to 150 pages. I think that is still fairly reasonable and it keeps things simple still. :)

Amber J (Thereadingwitch) Ok so a bit of an odd question. I am reading Mind Like a Diamond. It's an arc and doesn't have a page count on either GoodReads or Amazon. I did find a page count of 318 on barnes & noble. So my question is, can I use it for the challenges?

Patti and Deborah Amber J wrote: "Ok so a bit of an odd question. I am reading Mind Like a Diamond. It's an arc and doesn't have a page count on either GoodReads or Amazon. I did find a page count of 318 on barnes &..."

Ok so because it doesn't have a page count on GoodReads or Amazon. You can't use it for anything that has to do with the page count. For instance. If the task calls for a 3 in the page count. But I'll accept it for other tasks if you provide the link proving it's over 100 pages long.

Patti and Deborah Lori wrote: "I am using a Google Chromebook and Chromebox and I have difficulty posting pictures. Can I post my challenge answers without a pic of the book?"

Yes you can. I assume your talking about the link to the book? If you can't post any link. Just make sure you add the author with the title. So I can find the book, if I need to confirm anything from it. :)

The open-ended just means that I don't have an end date for when I close the challenge completely. I let players do their tasks until barely anyone is playing anymore. That's what that means.

As for signups. I have been leaving mine open for a month or two before I close them to new players. But a lot of them will depend on the type of challenge and the on the Mod who runs it. My Genre of the Month challenge for instance will be available for sign-ups most of the year.

I hope that helps clear up any confusion. :)

Patti and Deborah Sandy wrote: "Yes, thanks very much, Amber. This information is very clear and very helpful. I will be sure to keep a close eye on new challenges so that I don’t miss any sign-up deadlines."

I do send out a Newsletter at the end of the each month with all new challenges for the upcoming month. So that should help :)

Patti and Deborah Sandy wrote: "Yes, thanks very much, Amber. This information is very clear and very helpful. I will be sure to keep a close eye on new challenges so that I don’t miss any sign-up deadlines."

Oh and you can find all challenges that are still taking on new players here:

Lori Wilen Where a task requires a passage from the book to be written in the completion of the task, does the book have to be finished or can it still be in progress? If I need to wait until the books is finished, it is not a problem, as I can mark the page. Thanks. Sorry if this is a dumb question.

You need to wait until the book is finished. I would suggest marking the place in the book or right down the page or location.

DeeNeez For some reason I can no longer copy the button images in order to paste into my Button Tracker thread.

When I click on the ‘Copy image’ option, then try to paste in my tracker… no image is saved to paste. …paste option doesn’t pop up, as if nothing was save.

Doing a copy text, then paste works fine. Only images are not working. Everything was working fine Jan 15 when last button image was saved.

Not sure what to do ☹️

You want to select Copy Image Link not just Copy Image.

Well, bummer. ‘Copy image link’ is no longer an option. Only option as are:
Save image
Copy image
Open image
Open image in new tab
Search google for this image

message 37: by DeeNeez (new)

DeeNeez Amber, I found a work around.
In case anyone else has this problem the new steps are:

~ Select image in new tab
~ Then copy the URL of the new tab
~ Paste the URL into the link area

Patti and Deborah Shandra wrote: "Will there be another round of Bingo this year? I missed the signup for the one running!"

There might be. I'm unhappy with the way I went with the cards and I'm currently trying to figure out something better. If I do come up with some way I like better, then there will be another round after we finish our current card. :)

Thank you! I’ll keep an eye out! Bingo was my favorite challenge in my old reading group. They did teams and it was a large event. I like the idea of having a solo card to play better since it would be less pressure as there’s no one relying on me except myself.

I’m really glad to be here. The lack of hard deadlines makes the challenges fun rather than another source of stress.

Erika I have a question about the readathon

Sorry if it was asked before but I went around and I could not find an answer.

My first Readathon starts tomorrow and I would like to start a book today as I just finished what I was reading, I am wondering, since I have to log in the pages I read daily, if I start a 400 pages book now and I read 100 of them today, can I use the last 300 pages for the readathon or only books starting at the beginning of the challenge count?

Patti and Deborah Erika wrote: "I have a question about the readathon

You can use any pages read during the readathon. So in the instance you used. You can count the 300 pages as long as its read during the readathon, but you can't count the first 100 if you read them today.
Also you can count the book for books read if you finish it during the readathon even if you started it before the readathon started.

I don't why you can't still do the challenges. But I will ask that you still use the edition you read according to Goodreads for all task completions, for things like date published, page count and such.

Kira Can audiobooks be used for tasks if they're currently audio only?
So there's no print format to take a page number from? Is there a minimum audio length?

Patti and Deborah Kira wrote: "Can audiobooks be used for tasks if they're currently audio only?

If there isn't page count. Then you can still use audiobooks that are at least 3 hours long. But you wouldn't be able to use it for tasks that require something to do with the page count.
