I hope I come up to both your standards of comment!

Old Man JP An excellent review. I missed the similarities to the present situation in the US in my reading of the book but you are very right. I, sometimes, do pick up on similarities in other books, however, especially in Upton Sinclair's "Dragons Teeth", which I recently read. It sent a chill up my spine in his telling of the rise of Hitler. It almost mirrored Trump's rise.

Thanks Jerry. It may be that Trump’s personal history is so common as to be banal. His is the way you do things to get and keep power, not for any real reason but to have it. In other words, he is a dangerous cliché. I share your chill.

Paula K Your comparison of present day America to 90s Peru is difficult to read, Michael. Most of us in Boston don’t stand by the garbage our current regime throws about. Thank goodness a new election is not so far away...your review is awesome as always, Michael...

Thanks Paula. But unfortunately there are places like Mississippi and Missouri and quite a number of Republicans spread around that vote too. They don’t/can’t read. But they do vote. One despairs.

Old Man JP Please excuse me for intruding in on this discussion but I completely agree with BlackOxford. I think that the US is in a very precarious position right now. Trump supporters ignore the most obvious and blatant abuses of power and the similarities to Hitler's rise are frightening. My biggest concern, however, is that even if he loses the election he won't hand over power. He has been slowly consolidating power in the Justice Dept., courts and military and still has a couple of years to increase it.

Yes, Jerry, a frightening situation.

I like the National Enquirer aspect. The original Spanish version of this book had a provocative cover holding up a newspaper! Same sleeve different time period

Always the same sleeve, isn’t it?

William2 Leave it to the Shining Path to extol a man who killed 70,000,000 of his own people by way of too many boneheaded schemes to count. Sheesh.

People are insane on the whole.
