Just to answer this so that people do not misinterpret this comment...the character in the book who used the word "Colored" was an elderly African American woman telling a white woman an old story told to her by her grandmother describing how in WWI the black soldiers were sent to the front of the lines before the whites, therefore when that 1917 African-American mother knew when her sons were called to fight she knew they were not coming back because "the colored boys were always the first at the front line in battle". The phrase was used in context of a 1917ish black woman regarding her sons. THAT was the term then and what her great granddaughter would use in the South to retell that family story. It's quite alright if you didn't like the book's, which is a collection of Southern stories and recipes within a larger continuing story--just please don't leave remarks as if I wrote something racist. I believe had you continued reading you'd have found it a deeply heartwarming story about found family, church family, and friendship.
