Fascinating write-up and quotations, Fred - a good reminder to read this too, thank you. A couple of years ago, I read his poetry in a bilingual edition (to study Italian, a lot of his poetry is quite narrative) and especially the poems that were published posthumously struck me as dark, melancholic, sober and intense.

This is the first work by Pavese that I have read. I will have to add his poetry to my tbr list.
