Wick Welker Great review. I just read this one too. Difficult to get through but very good.

message 2: by Arianne (new)

Arianne X It was a terrifying read. As usual, my review is likely prolix and over written.

It was actually cathartic to write. I was half wondering if it would be flagged and deleted due to my anti-Christian views. I have already been banned from posting reviews on Amazon based on my criticism of religion.

… “New fascist theocracy of brutality and cruelty” - Can you give some examples of what you’re talking about? What cruelty and brutality are event committed in the name of Christianity?

Just for starters, how about women being denied miscarriage care, going into sepsis shock and being left permanently infertile as a result. This is based on the absurd Christian notion that an embryo is the same as a living child.

message 9: by (new)

… This isn’t happening though.

Arianne X Lauren wrote: "This isn’t happening though."

There are well documented cases of which you must be unaware or are choosing to ignore. Do I need to list them for you?

message 11: by (new)

… Miscarriage care is legal in very state as well as exceptions for abortion when the mother’s life is in danger. This is all within the physicians discretion and the responsibility to would rest with them. It is convenient, however, to say that a doctors performance was due to “abortion restrictions”

message 12: by (new)

… The cases I have read (and yes, I’m very familiar with the hysteria that erupts every time a woman’s corpse is used as a political football) are due to medical negligence

message 13: by (new)

… I live in one of the reddest states and the standard of care has not change at all in regards to miscarriages

putperest "I was half wondering if it would be flagged and deleted due to my anti-Christian views."

I actually burst out laughing to this bit and made a mess because I was eating my homemade sweet sour chicken while reading this. Thanks Arianne.

What about the women jailed after seeking misarrange care? - BBC report filed 11/11/21.

In 2023, a women in Ohio was jailed and faced felony charges after miscarrying at home. - AP News 12/16/23.

In February of 2024 the Alabama Supreme Court classified frozen embryos as children based on scripture.

I can go on to list cases with real citations.

Well, it really happened on Amazon, so why not on GR?

… The first instance, the woman was abusing illicit drugs and likely caused the miscarriage because they found methamphetamine in her unborn son’s liver and brain.

The second case the charge was abuse of a corpse and didn’t have to do with the miscarriage.

As to the first story, since when does illicit drug use, which I am not condoning, rise to a charge of first degree manslaughter and a four year prison term when the medical examiner did not determine the reason for the death of the fetus? She was not charged with illicit drug use.

From the same report: "From 1973-2020, NAPW has recorded 1,600 such cases, with about 1,200 occurring in the last 15 years alone.

Although some involved women who were arrested for things such as falling down, or giving birth at home, the vast majority involved drugs, and women of colour were overrepresented."

As to the second case, the charge of abusing a corpse (a bazaar charge) was used as cover so as to charge her for having the miscarriage at home in the toilette. A doctor confirmed that the nonviable fetus would not have survived. She was alone and scared into acting as she did by the very laws criminalizing healthcare.

What about the Alabama Supreme Court scripture case?

Fnaught Trump is a good president. And he is an ultra-Zionist, as was his father. But rest assured that actual Christian Nationalists are disappointed with him mainly due to the H1B issue, which is so massive that reporters have to go to the archives in order to dig up evidence of his supposed secret ideology plans and misogyny. He's not a Fascist or anything of the sort, but a 90s Democrat. The movement surrounding him is another beast entirely

message 20: by Fnaught (new)

Fnaught *ideological

message 21: by Fnaught (new)

Fnaught **the reason for the 'digging up' being the fact that Trump is not an ethnocentrist, and the people whose brains are an extension of the TV cannot admit that anything but the 2016 CNN version of reality is correct because they would lose their minds otherwise

An ultra Zionist is a fascist. Trump is a deranged fascist. You refuse to see the evidence before your eye, in his word and his deeds. I get it, don't believe the facts, believe what Trump tells you to believe.

message 23: by (new)

… Please provide sources where women are being arrested for miscarriages at home.

message 24: by Fnaught (new)

Fnaught 'An ultra-Zionist is a Fascist' is a delusional contradiction in terms. You're a moron

message 25: by Fnaught (new)

Fnaught I'm not pro-Trump

message 26: by (new)

… Fnaught, the only Christians I talk to are, like you say, almost exclusively concerned with economic issues rather than dogmatics but then I have to listen to the secular liberals version of the rapture that is to come.

message 27: by Arianne (new)

Arianne X Lauren wrote: "Please provide sources where women are being arrested for miscarriages at home."

I already did so above. The AP story about the woman in OH.

But how about the story of Samantha Casiano. Her fetus had anencephaly (failure of brain and skull to develop). The fetus had no chance of survival. The State of Texas compelled her to carry on with a doomed pregnancy for months, she had to endure a painful labor, a high-risk child birth and had to see the child gasp for air and die upon birth traumatizing her and her family. - NPR 04/06/2023.

Like I said "New fascist theocracy of brutality and cruelty."

message 28: by Arianne (new)

Arianne X Fnaught wrote: "I'm not pro-Trump"

Then why did you say above, "Trump is a good president." ?

You are not making sense but I guess that is what I should expect.

Arianne X Fnaught wrote: "'An ultra-Zionist is a Fascist' is a delusional contradiction in terms. You're a moron"

Name calling, first refuge of a scoundrel.

Zionism is a colonial settler project and a form of fascism.

I must congratulate you. You have lasted longer than most of my interlocutors before stooping to name calling and personal attacks.

Such ad hominem attacks are an admission that you have been defeated in an argument and cannot respond to the facts and reasoning offered as evidenced by your last comment.

Thank you

In terms of sexuality, it is the Christians who are obsessed with everyone else's sexuality whether it s gay people, trans people or even the in the use of birth control.

Arianne X Lauren wrote: "Indeed I’m no match for your intellectual powers"

I said no such thing. I thought you were a very worthy and fine interlocutor until you stooped to name calling and personal attacks.

My only criticism of you, or advise for you if I may, is to not fall into the trap of the ad hominem fallacy.

I mean, do I have "intellectual powers" (indirect, implied, and passive aggressive attack) or am I "hysterically stupid" (a direct personal attack) ?

message 36: by putperest (new)

Arianne X Lauren wrote: "I did not say you were stupid, I said your worldview was. Anyways, thank you for the advice"

Perhaps you are confusing nuance with semantics here.

How can I have a "hysterically stupid and delusional worldview" without being a hysterically stupid and delusional person?

It is interesting that you chose the adjective "hysterical". This was the favored 19th Century patriarchal diagnosis of a woman if she was upset by something/anything.

Casey Thanks for your excellent review! I read half of this book but got distracted for a while with other books. Today, I watched an interview with Katherine Stewart and am now eager to resume. To refresh my memory, I read a bunch of reviews, including yours, plus all those toxic comments. Now I'll have to detox! I envy your endurance! And I'm looking forward to finishing this latest Stewart book. It helps to know I'm not alone in all this, our country's living nightmare.

Casey,

You are so correct. This country is now a living nightmare brought to us by the bungling buffoon and his Christian commissars intent upon setting up their own oppressive Christian theocracy.

Happy reading.
