Hi JR, I just read your review for A Slow Fire Burning (thank you) and also saw your absence of stars/review for The Girl On the Train and Into The Water. One hit wonder authors can be so difficult, especially if the first book you read is their one hit! Much like Coleen Hoover with her novel Verity, turned out to be a one hit wonder for me. I recently purchased The Girl On The Train at our local library book sale and do look forward to reading it but likely will not read anything else by Paula Hawkins. Still, I'm ever hopeful that I may find a contemporary author whose work I'd consistently enjoy reading. Hope your next read is a 5 star 🧚♀️🙋🏼!
I remember liking Into the Water. I must have, since I gave it 4 stars. Sorry you didn't like this one or her others. I feel bad I abandoned Patricia Cornwell several years ago, but the rushed ending of one of her books ruined it for me. Sigh.
Yeah I did not like into the water either but loved girl on the train. That’s why I keep coming back to this author, hoping there’s still some of that first book magic, but wind up being disappointed every time
I totally agree. Each book is worse than the previous, this was awful!

Thanks for the review. It saved me a lot of time. I just returned it to the library without reading it. I, too, liked Girl from the Train. But it does seem that she is a one hit wonder.
I totally agree eith your rating. I also fave it 2 stars. I didn’t enjoy the read snd kept wondering why I was so intent on finishing it. Will probanly not read any more of her books.
I made it to chapter 6 and couldn’t continue
It was a waste of time to read. I kept thinking it would get better. It didn’t.
At least I finally finished it. Why kill off Becker, the only likeable character?

Ugh I slogged through this. Loved girl on the train but her last three have been barely readable.
So funny how everyone sees things so differently. This is one of my new favorite books. Definitely in my top five reads.

Agree that the relationships were odd. Without spoiling anything, I will say that no British man could have that stiff an upper lip when it comes to his lover.

I agree with you about this book. However, I’ve enjoyed her other ones so this was just a huge miss for me.
I also believe The Girl On The Train was her only book that was fantastic. I really thought every book of hers would be just as good but nope, looks like this may be the last one I read of hers .

I think the blue lights are the police coming to rescue him from the tide; maybe he still dies from the morphine.
Hard agree. It annoyed me that Hawkins keep making reference to the whittling knife that Becker then picks up and puts in his pocket. Ah! I thought this will be the tools he uses to save himself. Nope! Hawkins just ignores it, like she just forgot and went for some Haunting of Hill House abstract ending. Readers deserved to have the plot threads tied off. The whole 'the ambiguity of art' schtick won't wash there.
Agreed. I just didn’t care about any of the characters enough to be invested
