Part of the draw for Maledictions is the wide spread of horror themes and styles on offer. Cassandra Khaw's writing is *very* good, it's just got a very singular style that tickles a lot of fans of the dreamy, liminal kind of horror of say, David Lynch. It's not to everyone's taste, but I think it's quite enjoyable, personally.
