Got to remember this was written in 1955.
In Britain (and quite a few other Western countries), it wasn't entirely uncommon.
You'll see it in works by Jane Austen and Charles Dickens too.
For much of the 18th and 19th centuries:
First-cousin marriage was legal in Britain. It was common among the middle and upper classes. It helped keep property, wealth, and family connections together. It wasn't generally regarded as morally suspect.
The shift away from it began in the late 19th to mid 20th centuries.
