I appreciate it Trish! I often find myself enjoying reviews and status updates from readers who aren't enjoying the book they're reading but who are doing a great job of explaining why - often with a sense of humour - and you nailed it 😆

Funny how someone reads retrospection and others read whining. I admire someone raw, authentic, and unafraid of others reviews or impressions. I’m amazed at some of the hate, as I don’t see anyone else writing a memoir in here or traveling to places like she does. We need more women like Eva in our world. Her travel, like many others, help deflate propaganda of how unsafe the world is. She’s not perfect by any means and I don’t place her on a pedestal. She laughs at herself, she shows her weak moments without editing them out. It takes a lot of courage and dedication to put your own personal thoughts on paper. And then let the world read them? but I wonder, if so miserable, why finish something? Just to write a “memoir” about it?

Glad you enjoyed the book Destiny. I don't think you need to question another reader's motivations for finishing a book or sharing their honest thoughts about that book with their friends here on GR though. You could ask yourself the same question, why are you using your valuable reading time to question this reader's review and opinions on a book? Why not scroll on by? It's okay for readers to have different reading experiences.

Funny how some people comment under the reviews of total strangers they aren't even "friends" with and immediately throw around words like "hatred". *loooool* And for your objective information: there ARE other female solo travelers out there; some of which don't travel with camera crews and producers from National Geographic. By the way: this very book does indeed PROVE how dangerous the world is, ironically enough.
Moreover, introspection is fine and dandy, but crying and throwing a fit every 3 minutes is not introspection.
As for your question about why I finished: I almost never DNF a book because hope dies last. Not that I owe you any explanation.

Oh wow, you must have really disliked the book. It's interesting that it triggered such a strong reaction in you.

I finished it about an hour ago, so it's still very fresh in my mind, and I honestly can't think of a single passage that I would describe as whining. Nor did I feel that she complained excessively about money throughout the book. To me, it was something she mentioned occasionally, but not nearly enough for it to leave a lasting impression.

What's interesting is that it clearly stood out to you so much that you actually went and looked up how much money she makes. I find that a bit surprising, but it's also a good example of how two people can read the exact same book and come away with completely different experiences.

I guess sometimes a book and a reader just aren't the right match for each other.

So glad I didn't jump on this. I dislike people who whine and are tone-deaf.

It’s interesting to hear how different takeaways can come from one book. I didn’t see it as whining at all, and she often mentioned how lucky she is to have had a good startup city-job before her travels, and the social media money now. The only times I recall is when she mentioned taking out her “life savings” for the truck and for the land. Maybe not her life savings but a chunk of her income I guess.

She talked about herself bc it’s a book about herself. She talked about it being very hard because the things she does ARE very hard. She always brought the stories of struggle back to a lesson learned or value of an adventure. What do you expect someone to share in these situations?

Although I had a very different experience with this book (I quite enjoyed it), do I appreciate being able to read your review and think about it in a different way.

I always get immersed in books - for better or worse. *shrugs*

I find it highly interesting how complete strangers seem to feel as if they have to check on low-rating reviews and then "correct" or "explain away" negative criticisms. Not that this is my first rodeo.
