I really agree with what you said about “carrying the fire.” That’s the part of the book that stayed with me the most. The world is so bleak it almost feels unbearable, but the boy’s compassion keeps reminding you that something human is still alive. And the father’s devotion… that relationship is what makes the whole thing hurt so much. In a world that has lost almost everything, they still have that one sacred thing between them.
