Kalliope Lovely review... you made me think of my father too... May be I ought to read this book too.

Lisa Lieberman Thank you, Kalliope. Every reader makes a book her own. Norris never mentions fathers-- I brought this to my reading of Dakota, but this is such a rich meditation on loneliness and community that I imagine you'll find something here for yourself.

If you do read it, please let me know what you think.

Quo Lisa, I very much enjoyed your thoughtful & warmly personal comments on "Dakota: A Spiritual Geography", a book I read & enjoyed as well. Kathleen Norris makes S. Dakota resemble an almost primitive landscape far-removed from anywhere I've experienced but at the same time a hauntingly interior zone that could be almost anywhere. I've enjoyed her prose in this & other books & your review aptly evokes the spirit of her writing. Bill

Warwick Yes, lovely review. I was slightly put off by what I thought might be her religiosity, but from the sound of this I was worrying needlessly.

Thanks, Warwick. She extrapolates from Catholic teachings, makes them accessible, even to secular Jews.
