Steve Shelby Post your suggestions here for the August 2026 Book of the Month, like this:

Format: (TITLE) by (AUTHOR)
Example: Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton

All nominees:
- must be a techno-thriller
- must not be your own book
- must be less than 900 pages
- must not be a recent book of the month
- must have at least 1,000 ratings, or … to accommodate new books coming out … can be less than 1,000 ratings if it is by a “well-known author” which is defined as an author having prior techno-thriller books with 100,000+ ratings.

I’ll put the nominees in a poll as soon as we get enough nominees.

Nominees are taken first-come first-serve. I prefer broad participation, so if 5 people nominate, I take the first book (that fits the criteria) from the first five people. If less than 5 people nominate, I take the second nominee from the first person with at least 2 nominations, and so on. About half the time, no one else nominates a book other than me, so all nominees end up being mine. I would prefer it to be a group effort. Please feel free to suggest books for the group.

Why? We read the Aggressor series, about China attacking Taiwan. It was better than Tom Clancy, which is saying something. This Future Wars series is a prequel to Aggressor. We read #1 Bering Strait as the May 2026 book of the month.

Why? In the last pages of Relic it had quite the sequel staging twist. It’s on my TBR. It’s now on our all time list … and I haven’t read it! 😱 That must be rectified.

Why? Jed voted for it high on the Technothrillers: Best of All Time list … and I haven’t read it! 😱 This can’t stand. I’ve gotta read it.

Why? It’s well rated. I read it some time ago and was entertained. I keep get it conflated with Old Man’s War. They are both fairly entertaining, perhaps along the lines of say Ender’s Game.

Why? Not sure it’s really a technothriller. But, all say it is good and funny. It’s pretty popular and it’s about impossible in the last year or two to talk books with young whippersnappers without them asking if you read Carl? Need to put this s$@%t to bed. Might be for a younger generation that grew up gaming instead going outside to play. But … us older nerds can still ride. We played Pong and D&D, real arcade games, and Atari and Intellivision for many years before Mario got all wrapped around the axle with “leveling up” on Nintendo. Pretty sure we can grok this just fine. Yeah … Google it.

Simon Mortimer Hey Steve,

I can't find the poll function (yes I am on desktop). I'm intrigued by Dungeon Crawler Carl, so my vote goes there.

A big shout out for Stranger in a Strange Land though - one of my all time favs, but I have read it many times. Obviously one or Mr Musk's favourites too. I don't feel like I have a great deal in common with the trillionaire except literary tastes. The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy and Strangers in a Strange land clearly left a deep and enduring impact on him - as they did me.

I will be starting I-Robot late next week and have a think about contributing to the Sept Book list options - starting with ' The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury. I have read it but not for a long time. It left an impression on me I recall - but can no longer remember why.

Steve Shelby The poll is at the bottom of the main group page. You don’t need to go to the poll on the Polls page, … but you can.

Here is a link to this poll:
