Haha I'm guess the style of language in the book from your review! 😂
😆 this is on my TBR but it’s been a ‘shall I, shan’t I’ book for a fair few years. Updates like yours reinforce my reasoning for ignoring it all this time!

To all the ladies above: I do tend to exaggerate and the book is actually surprisingly more readable than I thought it would be, 1859 I figured would tie my tongue in knots. But it IS very long-winded: Victorian, serialized at the time, say in 55 words what can be said in 5. I'm still liking it at present; it's just starting to wear.

I do have patience with books like this, providing the characters don’t annoy me too much and the long sentences aren’t pointless waffle! (I’m looking at you, Anne Brontë and your Tenant of Wildfell Hall!! Yet I thoroughly enjoyed Agnes Grey by her!)

Then don't scratch it off yet. One character is intended to be annoying, but he's annoyingly amusing. Another you may have difficulty with.
