What's the issue with "Pip"? It's a fairly common shortening / nickname of Philip / Philipa.
@Adam: I will give you two reasons, because that is a totally valid observation:
1) Personal associations with the name "Pip" that make it extremely odd/discomforting in the context of a romance for me especially!
2) Its use in the context of this romance comes across as ingratiating and inappropriate as Ned and Philipa are explicitly estranged at the start of the story. It seems to want to serve as a shorthand for Ned's continued emotional attachment to Philipa, but instead reads as manipulative because the story is so heavily attuned to her perspective: that Ned used her to get close to the smugglers and is on the cusp of arresting her brother.
