Her (Mary's) secret was to unite herself to God in order that she might become more while doing less. (chapter 7)
I like the Golding quote, "I think women ae foolish to pretend they are equal to men; they are far superior and always have been. Whatever you give a woman, she will make greater. If you give her sperm, she'll give you a baby. If you give her a house, she'll give you a home. If you give her groceries, she'll give you a meal. If you give her a smile, she'll give you her heart. She multiplies and enlarges what is given to her."

If you give her s..."Nobel-prize winning writer William Golding gave an interview regarding his masterpiece Lord of the Flies in which he says the famous line: "I think women are foolish to pretend they are equal to men, they are far superior and always have been." According to research, that is the only part of the "quote" that he actually said.
The rest, about sperm-->baby, house-->home, groceries-->meal, etc., has been added over time by someone else, alledgedly by author Erick S. Grey (who also alledgedly added the rather facetious line about giving a woman some cr*p and receiving a ton of s***).
Others have been inspired to make poems based on Golding's actual words, such as poet Carrie West:
"If you give a woman your pain, she will give you compassion," etc. https://www.independent.com/2019/11/2... )
Here are the links to both read about this and listen to the interview segment:

As is often the way with quotes, they become distorted and mistakenly attributed to someone in particular (like people saying that "God helps those who help themselves" is in the Bible (it's not)).
Social media abounds with the Golding misquote, thus perpetuating the myth that Golding said more than he did. When everyone repeats the same thing, it eventually becomes accepted as general truth.
If anyone finds evidence that Golding actually said the entire quote, please let everyone know, once and for all.

The line that I kept coming back to wasn't even about feminism, but about Mary. It was one of the lines that was recorded during an exorcism and every time I read it, I'm overcome with emotion:"She is full of light. She blinds me, blinds me, cursed! When she was born, the world stopped for a moment. All creation stopped to look at her, all creation: the stars, the air, the fire, the water, the ground. All creation stopped. No one noticed besides me. I knew it. I knew who she was, and I could not do anything..."
Wow!!! Can you imagine?
