Lee D. Blumenthal I’m Lee D. Blumenthal, an author and systems thinker. I’ve always been fascinated by what happens when a highly structured system, like a modern military army, encounters a variable it can’t calculate.

My new technothriller, Echoes of Genius: The Obsidian Sting, is set in the Central Highlands of Vietnam in 1968. It follows Major Elias Cayman, a Texas A&M graduate and Green Beret, who finds himself caught between the "Whiz Kids" in the Pentagon and an ancient rhythm he doesn't understand.

The variable? A 1.6 Terahertz signal is haunting the radio nets, and the only person who recognizes it is a 16th-century Japanese warlord, Oda Nobunaga, who has been pulled through time.

I’ve worked hard to capture the tactical reality of the 5th Special Forces Group and the institutional discipline of the A&M Corps of Cadets. I'm opening the floor for a Q&A on the book, historical anomalies like Son My, or the physics behind the "Poltergeist Signal."

To start things off, I have a question specifically for the Veterans and history buffs in the group:
In the book, Elias Cayman has to choose between the rigid, data-driven logic of the Pentagon and the rhythmic strategy of an ancient Shogun. In your experience, when does 'By-the-Book' logic fail a leader on the ground, and what was the 'variable' that the brass at headquarters completely missed?

I look forward to responding to your thoughts.

Lee D. Blumenthal PamG or Sean, can we add this book to BOTM? Maybe some Good Thriller readers will take note of it and give it a try. Maybe we can steer them back to this discussion and get some of your members engaged.

Lee, We have the first book (The Deep Surge) in the series scheduled as a BOTM in November.

We are trying to spread BOTMs amongst the various authors in the group who write thrillers and are interested in having their book become a BOTM. Please check back with us later in 2027.
