Not even nominated for Best Protection? I'm shocked.
I haven't read the book, but saw the movie recently: are they related in any meaningful way? Did you like it either as a thing by itself or as an interpretation of the book?
oh the movie is really good, but the book is ten woolfillions better. that we have both is a cause for a sprightly jig!

Yes, they are related. The film is brilliant and I think it really captures the strangeness of the book. I can't think of anyone else who could have pulled Orlando off like Tilda does. The book is better, of course, it's almost as good as Mrs Dalloway. Almost.

Your review made me feel like I had done a great injustice to this book, it's worth more than the initial 2 stars I gave it..but I agree with her personal feeling on the book though..or maybe I'm too simple minded ..
Taf, if it's any consolation, I didn't appreciate the book the first time I read it, but last year, at last, I did.
Did not know the Kiev story. I was there at the time but obviously not the part of the right mob.
Do please change the reference to Ukrainian mafia. It is Kiev after all.
BTW, the river Dnipro no longer freezes over in the winter.
Random note: I have decided to read every review of yours, Paul, and I'm going in the order in which the reviews appeared when I asked for the list (I keep worrying that the order will suddenly change as I don't know what principle GR used) and it will probably take me several years but it's okay, I'm still young... seventh decade of life only. I'm on review 360 (not counting the reviews I've read since I began "following" you -- I'm so not into these things that I still use quotation marks for following) and I thought Orlando was the perfect place to stop for a second to wave.
