Cozy Mystery
Set on the fictional island of St. Lides in the Isles of Scilly in Cornwall, England

Entertaining, Atmospheric, humorous at times
"Locked island" mystery - Big reveal at the end
Dragged some in the middle

Recently I’ve read these books, that I enjoyed a lot. They are excellent examples of three different genres: a romance, a thriller and a novel.

Great review, Pam. I've been curious for quite some time how you come up with your numeric ratings. Do you give points for various aspects of the story and average it out?

Thanks! Yes. I use a spreadsheet. For each book, I have several characteristics (characterization, worldbuilding, pacing, etc.) that I rate from 1 to 5 to the nearest quarter point. That is 75% of the score. Then I rate my overall enjoyment of the book (again from 1 to 5 to the nearest quarter point) and that counts for the other 25% of the rating.

That's very interesting. You sound very precise and math oriented in that way. Although my husband who is an engineer says he would write the same review every time if he was on GR: 'It was good. Good guys win, bad guys lose.' 😆

Last week, I finished two books, and have finally gotten around to reviewing them both. Julie Johnson's Reign of Remnants romantasy series surprised me by being a decent, if heterosexual, read in a genre I'm only ever ambivalent about.

Great reviews, Werner. I would probably enjoy the second book the most (read many years ago), but you make a strong case for reading Anderson's novel.

Short story collections can be hit or miss. It sounds like this one had some good stories in it.

I generally don't enjoy books that bounce around a lot in time. It tends to break up the flow for me. I'm glad you had a good discussion on it with your daughters.
