I’m sold!

All of Whipple's book are this readable Beda, for that matter, I've never read a Persephone book that I didn't love.

Wonderful review, K. Dorothy Whipple is a real delight, quite different from other English authors of the time. She's quite prolific too, so there's lots more out there. I'm really pleased you enjoyed this so much.

K, wow! I love it when friends help each other discover memorable books to read. I've never read Dorothy Whipple but you have me interested now, especially since it brought to mind that quote which suited Wives and Daughters. Thank you, K, for the kind mention.

I don't know if you'll have the same experience as I did, Karyn, but I had that "lost in a book" feeling that I haven't had in some time. I'm currently reading a couple of books that I'm truly invested in and will likely give 4 to 5 stars, but they remind me of the real world we live in. Which is a good thing to be reminded of, but it's ever so nice to be lost in another world entirely.

Thank you, Dave. What a joy when a reader finds a "new" prolific author! I felt that Whipple's writing was different than other English writers I've read. I was so immersed by the second page!

I was swept away in this novel when I read your review and it so plainly hit me why I was so immersed. I can see myself adding more of these kinds of novels to my reading. I'm definitely ready for Gaskell!

I thought of your love for romance novels and I wonder if you get that "lost in a book" feeling when you read them. I'm currently reading a few books that are very good, likely 4 to 5 stars, but each one in their own way bring me back to the sad things of the world we live in. I miss the sheer joy I had while reading Because of the Lockwoods. I'm so interested...which Whipple do you have?

Thank you, Jen! I probably set high expectations for this one, but I think it's because deep down I didn't think I'd like it nearly as much as I did. I left this world for awhile. 😊

I own no Whipple, K, but Libby and Hoopla have (combined) They Were Sisters, High Wages, and Someone At a Distance. I am just about to start a "big" book (The Wayfinder), which Libby says is available soon. I promised myself I was going to read Europe Central (which I do own) this year. That is going to take some time so I need to get started soon. I am going to try to get to one of those Whipple books, but it will be a couple of months at least. What Whipple book are you reading next.

And as for romance, yes, as with great litfic, good romance does that for me, I talk about the need for escape through books a lot, and romance offers the most consistent opportunities to lose myself in a book. I sink right in, lose all track of time, It doesn't happen often with any genre, though when it does it is magic.

The Wayfinder looks SO good, Bonnie! I can't wait to know your thoughts about it! (small voice) The Orphan Master's Son as been on my shelf, unread, for YEARS. 😭 I've usually at least heard of most books, but I'm unfamiliar with Europe Central. I need to look that one up. As for Whipple, I now want to read all of her books but They Were Sisters and Someone at a Distance interest me the most.

I will let you know when I get to Whipple. Maybe we will be on the same schedule?

The Orphan Master's Son has also been on my shelf forever. I will have to read the books in reverse order of publication. I have heard great things about both books.

In this day and age of Bookstagram and Goodreads reviews, both of which I'm so thankful for, plus book jackets with detailed blurbs, it was a different experience knowing very little about the story. It reminded me of the days I always went blindly into a book!

I still love doing that. Sometimes I’ll read all about a book, get a hold of a physical copy and let it sit for years, and then go in cold. I just did that with a novel about taxidermy, and boy am I glad I went in cold.

Taxidermy? I'm intrigued! I can't wait to read your review of that one. I remember in my younger years at the library just picking books off the shelves with no idea what they were about and LOVING them!

I haven't read this author yet K, and, like you - I've only heard and read about her from our crazy mad bunch of friends (yes, that includes Antoinette!). You've reminded me to get Whippled sooner rather than later, it's terrible missing out. Great review :))

Thank you, Mark! This novel isn't even among her most read, but I sure did love it! Someone at a Distance seems to be her most popular, so I'm hoping to get my hands on a copy. I'll be looking out for when you get Whippled!

K, I'm delighted that I could play a part in getting this one into your hands, and that you fell head over heels into Whipple's story. There is nothing like that feeling of getting totally lost in a book and what a gift when it is nothing but pleasure. One of these days, I'll read this one. 😀
