People think the idea for this novel came from Crime and Punishment, but I'm not so sure. There was no published Italian translation of Dostoevsky's novel until years after Il cappello was published, and it's unlikely that that De Marchi read Russian. He did read French, but the first French translation was published only a year or so before De Marchi's book appeared, so that's a very tight window.
