I miss the lack of surprises. The racing to the phone to find out who's calling (today my phone tells me who's calling before I answer); driving in my car to see what's happening (today nothing's happening, no people walking or window shopping because in many cases it's unsafe and small businesses have closed or people are just living in an internet world that is a lousy replacement for physical contact). People getting together for card parties or games, which were so much fun but very few do anymore.
I'm mostly missing the carelessness of it all. Back in uni, I moved to a different city and there was this one meeting spot. If you felt like it, you'd slap on some makeup and just go. There was always 'someone' there. You never quite knew which mates you'd end up with unless you'd actually made a proper plan beforehand (which was rare).
Same with concerts - the real ones. Messy, loud, a dangerous to your limbs, packed with people from other departments you only had a passing acquaintance with. That chaos was half the fun.
Speaking of concerts… I took my daughter to an Alice Cooper show on the "Primal Scream" tour last year. I have more action at my kitchen table, honestly 😂. I saw him in my youth and left the venue sweaty, mascara running, hair a total bird's nest, crashed into by bodies all around me. That wild energy was part of the whole experience.
This time? Even though Alice was exactly the same performer as 20 years ago, my reaction was… meh.
But thanks for commending. It's nice to know I'm not the only one feeling the tug.
