Yeah I never could get into this book. I feel like he is a little bit more of the sort of author who would say to "wing it and figure things out later" as a writer but not in a bad way. His writing skills developed over the course of the Wingfeather Saga, as each book had a very different pace from one another. Book 1 was quirky, slow-start, character-introductions and introducing people to the world, while book 2 was action-packed with a cliff-hanger at the end (I had to wait several years for the third book), and book 3 was very character-driven and a bit slower with a mystery but still great. I still haven't read the 4th book but have heard it ended the series well.
He definitely seems to be a gardener rather than an architect, a pantser rather than a planner. I typically appreciate that, but this was just a bit too inconsistent and unstructured for my tastes.
