TJ Book Ninja Oh nuts! I was really looking forward to the release of this book because I too loved whalefall but your review has given me pause on picking this up at all. Too bad! The entire idea was enticing and the cover caught my interest as well. I'm sad.

LindaPf Tracye — I know! The premise was fascinating, too, but it all was ruined by this silly literary experiment. I guess I should be mad at the editor who let the author get away with it.

message 3: by Emma (new)

Emma Rose Always confused when people read a book with so much graphic violence but only find fault with a short segment of animal death. Surely if a crushed kitten was too much then the whole book full of flying body parts was an issue for you?

Jackie Machardy You were generous.

message 5: by flootzavut (new)

flootzavut @emma rose ever heard the notion of the straw that broke the camel's back?

Lee Agree with Jackie. A kind review of an absolutely terrible book. Have no idea why I felt obligated to finish it. It was just gross 🤢 And have no idea why it is getting so many positive reviews let alone won the Pulitzer

Pisces51 Thank you for your review! It would have not occurred to me that this novel would contain gratuitous animal abuse. I will not be buying it and reading it, period. I am a fan of extreme horror (and historical fiction). I have only ONE trigger. I feel fortunate you mentionedthe kittens. Informative and much appreciated review!!!

ashtray dead kittens? yeah no thanks 😭

message 9: by Thomas (new)

Thomas I was really put off by the gore. It was just too much. When one character grabs the decapitated horses head, pulls out the brains, eyes and everything else and then then wears it like a mask...I said "check, please".

message 10: by Jenna (new)

Jenna Moquin I was put off by the author referring to what Popkin was planning to do with the angel as “intercourse.”

message 11: by Sarah Lee (new)

Sarah Lee Thank you so much for writing this review. Just finished the book and came here to find others who disliked this as much as I did.
