I'm always disappointed when a story falls short of expectations, especially since the couple is already in an established relationship; the romance had potential. Also, I find it frustrating when it's hard to identify the setting in history :/ Sorry this didn't quite match what you were hoping for ♡♡♡♡
@Alexia it probably doesnt help that I have come off a run of some very well executed historical reads recently which kind of highlights the weaknesses here more than perhaps it would have otherwise. It was still an interesting read I suppose and I hope it finds its audience. Thank you! I hope my next read is more satisfying hahah ❤️
I fully agree with your take that multiple aspects of this book could've done more.
I didn't touch on it in my review, but you're so right about the town being oddly tolerant of a gay relationship that would've probably been heavily condemned by a religious town filled with assholes.

@The Reading Frog it just struck me as being so strange! To the point where it lead me down a research rabbit hole hahaha like sodomy was still punishable by death until 1869 apparently, so even if execution for this act was being phased out of being the preferred way to deal with it, I can’t imagine the amount of blind eyes and minimal snide remarks that it was met with here. I even looked at the queer history of remote logging camps (WHICH IS AN IRONICALLY FASCINATING READ) but that wasn’t really incorporated here disappointingly.
Anyway, glad I was able to sum up and echo your reading experience, it certainly wasn’t a bad read by any stretch of the imagination, I’m just a history nerd hahahaha
@Siavahda There was definitely some fun spooky vibes here still and I am sure that it’ll still be a great read for a lot of people, I just struggle to let go of odd brain worms once they get their hooks in and it’s unfortunately a little too easy for it to happen with historical. If the premise appeals (and perhaps if you have enjoyed this authors other works) it may still work for you better than it did me! Otherwise I hope you are able to pick up a book that serves you better with the tine you would have spent here hahah
I'm not gonna read your review until I finally get to the arc myself ahaha as per usual, but Frog's rating already made me reconsider my expectations, seems like it will be a right move 👀
@Teru I think just go into it with an open mind and you will find enough to be entertained! I feel like when historicals aren't a go to genre for you the elements which were missing for me probably wont register as such an irritation for you. I will be very interested to see how you find it! I hope its a bit more of a win for you than it was for me but either way I am sure that your thoughts will be a fascinating read ❤️
I can definitely see the lack of “more” in this story, it seems like everything just falls on surface level, like the author was just there and then decided to move on to a different topic. But I’m glad you enjoyed Dom and Lex!! Great reviewwww!!😊💕💕✨
@Astra I think some authors like the idea of writing something historical but then once it’s actually underway the amount of work that goes in to it is more than they anticipated. I guess if you are historical reader who just likes the vibe and spooky atmosphere of being in an older time and place this one might still land, but I like to come away from my historical books with like a clear idea of time period and lifestyle, which this just didn’t give me. I’ll be keen to see how other people end up going with it though!
