I really enjoyed the footnotes, the quasi-scholastic nature of the book with all the references to "famous" antique books of magic. There is a Tolkien-esque feel to the book : that we are hearing some stories selected from the many that could be told about this fascinating world.
I, too, was annoyed with the ending.

I think this has the most needed sequel in all of fantasy. I heard it's missing because the author got chronically ill. There is a little bit more from the world in Ladies of Grace Adieu
