Chasing the high. That is exactly what reading this series is like. It’s amazing until you’re waiting for something good to happen for like 800 pages at a time.

But you have to admit: Despite all these flaws and frustrations - maybe even because of them - this series just sticks in ones head... Plus I myself was completely changed on my view on storytelling, writing and reading in general.
And yes: If written a bit more clear and accessible for the reader, probably also cut down a bit, this would be so much better than it (for me) already is right now...
Oh and even if I love the series a LOT, it still was incredibly frustrating, tough to get through, felt unnecessary for big amounts, suffered from inaccessibility and all the rest you mentioned.
But there just is not anything else like this out there I feel like... Probably a good thing though haha

I totally agree with you. The reason I kept pushing through is I couldn't get the world out of my head. Despite its flaws, it is a tremendous work and I'm glad I went through it.

haha, I understand it's a flawed series. For me the good parts are so overwhelmingly good that the negatives are negligible.

Totally get it. I have those same feelings for other flawed books and series.
Interesting review. I have read 5 books and I have read thrice the first three. But still,I have no interest to read further on. I agree with every negative side you described.
I am the exact opposite of what Dustin said. The flaws are so prominent for me that the good parts cannot keep me invested.

Yep. It really comes down to a matter of taste. I could get past the flaws just enough to finish but I’m left feeling pretty disappointed . Others passionately love every book and that’s totally awesome for them.
Taste is a funny thing, I could've done with even more nondescript marines complaining in a trench. Those were some of my favorite parts.

Totally! It’s all about taste. I’ll admit I liked this element but when I realized toward the end that it’s one of the largest elements of all the books it kind of crushed me
spot-on. After the first couple of books I thought this series had the potential to be the best of all time ... but then it just keeps expanding and expanding without ever resolving anything it build up until it ultimatly fell apart for me. The individual books are good (most of the time), the series as a whole is not

Thanks. Yep I totally agree. Most individual books are very good. The over arching story gets muddled and the entire series suffers for it.
Phenomenal review, I loved it. Your use of one word turned a lightbulb on in my head: ‘demoralising’. I am not an inattentive reader, I don’t skim through books, I feel like I am capable of detecting subtle clues and hints. Malazan though just ground me down with baffling scenes constantly happening that caused me to wonder whether I ought to know what is going on or if this is just more needless obscurantism. People said the second read through is incredible, I made it back to the start of The Bonehunters before I got so hacked off with for wasting my time that I gave up again.

Thank you. Yes the constant world building was baffling. I don’t really care what the puritans says, there are parts of this series that are a terror awful and pointless slog. I’m glad I read it but have no interest in reading beyond the ten books and could never re read this beast.

So much of this feels like the pinnacle of epic fantasy until…..it isn’t. Still finding it worth reading though, if only to chase the high of certain moments that happened earlier.
