I am trying to think of good alternatives for kids' BofM historical fiction. I like Stephen Carter's graphic novel series iPlates a lot, and they are often funny, they would be my top recommendation. For something more serious, maybe H.B. (Heather) Moore's books, starting with "Out of Jerusalem". Although they might not be particularly kid friendly.
