To retain the followers, you should ask Support to merge the profiles into your claimed profile.

If "James" was used on a publication, then it needs to remain a separate profile.

Update Aug. 7: I went ahead and asked Support to do the merge. The profile with "James" will remain unless we hear you did not publish with the full middle name.
