I am in the middle of this one and really enjoying it so far. However, there is one unfinished story, "Wondruk", that leaves one hanging. My issue with most short story collections is I tend to pick them up and put then down. It is rare that I can read them straight through. Cheers!
Wondrak is unfinished, yes. I wish it were a finished story because I liked what was written. I didn't rate it (I rated every single story separately and kept notes 😊). I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it so far, and hope it'll continue.
One can hardly read, say, Maupassant, Kafka, or even Dahl and then come to the conclusion that short stories aren't a fabulous art form. But to each his own, I guess.
I've enjoyed some of Kafka's but never got on with Maupassant. Short stories are not a prefered form for me. I like to have more time to connect in depth with the stories and characters. That's where Zweig stands out for me. In the short span, he does more than mere storytelling. He brings his characters to life with all their emotional depth.
I get it. I did enjoy Letter from an unknown woman, which is basically a long short story.
Two short story writers I highly recommend are Stephen King and Ramsey Campbell.
This may be the start of a beautiful friendship, Piyangie, between you and the short story form. Please give a chance. Maybe follow with reading some of William Trevor's.
Thanks, Georgia. Zweig made me see the short story form from a different perspective. I'm hoping to continue more short stories collection but I'm a bit picky. So, thanks very much for the recommendation.
