So soon? It was almost 700 pages! Hahaha Seriously though, thank you. I’m really glad the length didn’t scare you off. One of the biggest things I wrestled with while writing The Car in White was whether I should cut a huge chunk out of it just to make it more commercially acceptable. In the end, I couldn’t do it. I wrote the story the way I believed it needed to be told. I’d rather write for people who appreciate literature that takes its time than chase today’s TikTok popcorn thrillers.
What you said about growing up in Queens, moving to Long Island, your Italian family, and recognizing those dynamics means a lot to me. That’s exactly who I was writing for. I wanted people from that world to feel like they weren’t reading fiction as much as remembering someone they knew.
And thank you for saying what you did about my past. I really appreciate that. I think all of us carry parts of our past with us forever. The trick is deciding what we’re going to build with them.
As for a third book… I wrestle with that all the time. Vincent in the present day is something I’ve thought about more than you know. The hard part is the way In Powder Blue ended. If you were really paying attention, I left something very important hanging in the air. I did that on purpose.
Maybe one day I’ll tell you what happens next. But if I do, it has to be for the right reasons and it has to earn its existence.
