Lars Jerlach and I text unusual words back to one another that we encounter in our reading. Usually we will use the word offered to us in a sentence. I of course shared empurpled with Lars and he wrote..."I'm often empurpled with fury when I watch Trump on TV." It is a word perfectly made for Trump. I was not surprised when you found a passage using it regarding Trump. :-)
I have copies of the Captain Alatriste series, but I've not read them. They look like a lot of fun. I've certainly enjoyed his other books. I caught up with him at a signing in Houston many years ago and had him sign all my books. Terrific guy!
I'm glad you liked this one. It was an enjoyable book to read and review. Thanks Mike!
I remember being swept away also in the adventure of this story as a young teen & I did enjoy Flynn as Captain Blood when I saw the movie.
You read it at the most perfect time Chris, but I still enjoyed the relentless push of the plot even as an old man.
Cared for a gentleman in his mid nineties a few years ago. Claimed he knew and drank with Flynn on occasion in Port Morsby.Flynn said he wanted to be rich and famous. He got his wish. I will read the book for sure. Thanks Jeffrey.

Like most people who pursue fame and riches I don't think Flynn ended up being very happy in the end. They get there and then they go...this is it? I hope you enjoy this one Nick!
I must read this book! I watched Captain Blood when I was a kid in Brazil (voice over!) and loved it.

Only the best kinds of books will do that.
Your reminded me that I enjoyed the heck out of The Ninth Gate so much that I ran out looking for anything by Perez-Reverte one day and hit a treasure trove at Bison Books. Cleaned out a shelf of theirs but i don't think I dickered about prices. That was several years ago and I still haven't read them yet!!
But they're there....waiting for the right moment....and I know I shall enjoy the heck out of them. One of the titles is "Captain Alatriste" and think that is actually a series of 3 books that has me wondering how similar it might be to "Captain Blood"
Ran across this just now:

The usual opinionated talking (air) heads empurpled the airwaves with gloom and accused Trump of disregarding and scoffing at scientists, and of being a militant know-nothing who disparaged science in general.— Conrad Black, National Review, "On Coronavirus, Trump Takes Charge," 30 Mar. 2020
empurpled - excessively elaborate or showily expressed; "a writer of empurpled literature"; "many purple passages"; "an over-embellished story of the fish that got away" over-embellished, purple. rhetorical - given to rhetoric, emphasizing style at the expense of thought; "mere rhetorical frippery"
Terrific review, Jeffrey, with no sign of empurpling at all!!
