you are correct my dear
While I enjoyed your review immensely, I have to disagree. Despite the near 20 years (or so it feels) between the second and third (allegedly) book, I still feel the strong need to know how this (supposed) bad ass mage becomes an old broken down bartender.
In 3-4 years??? Wait a minute... it means that by the time the third book is published, I'll probably have to reread the first two in order to refresh my memory...it's horrifying
I also have the suspicion that there is no way in hell that the entire story can be told in three books, five seem more likely, as we still need to see how Kvothe came to be at the point where he is now and how the magical uprising or whatever is going on at the beginning of book 1.
I haven't read the series though I'm still interested to. I've seen enough good reviews to at least give it a go. In saying that however, I can't really disagree with any of your points about Patrick Rothfuss.
I'm done. It took a couple of years to get here, but here I am. Good luck with the tv series, Pat, but be aware that I for one will not be watching - and I suspect I'm not alone in saying so. tl;dr. "Bye, Pat!"
"You wrote a book that a lot of people loved. How dare you not write your second and third book in a timely manner. God forbid that an author write how they wish to, and take however long they please. My opinion is all that counts and I will not be supporting you in anything else you do." Forgive me if I don't sympathise with your cause. This is a book we're talking about, not the cure to cancer and I'm sure PLENTY of people will support Pat's third book on it's release. In fact, the long wait will probably fuel hype when the third book is finally announced.
I'm one to always defend Pat. But it genuinely upsets me that he has taken this long. I have literally finished high school and at this point will finish college before this "trilogy" is done. I mean damn. He's one of the best authors I have ever read (I know that's not a shared opinion by everyone) but I'm tired of this waiting. I guess the final straw was when I found Pats YouTube channel which led me to his Twitch. Turns out he often streams and people donate to vote if he will spend the next 3 hours streaming games or working on book 3. Like what the actual fuck. Who does that??
Casey wrote: "I'm one to always defend Pat. But it genuinely upsets me that he has taken this long. I have literally finished high school and at this point will finish college before this "trilogy" is done. I me..."
What is his youtube channel? (unless you're referring to the worldbuilders channel?)
Nvm, found it!
Wait, wait, hold on a second. With his YouTube channel, are you saying that fans have to pay him to vote on whether or not he plays games or writes his book?! He sounds like a genuine scam artist, especially considering he had already told everyone that the third book was already finished...and fyi, I just read somewhere that he's being nasty to fans on Twitter and says he's not writing until he reaches his video game goals. O_o Are we sure he even wrote the first two books? He doesn't sound like someone who would be mature and talented enough to write an epic saga. To be fair, I haven't read a single word he's allegedly written, although I've thought about it.
It is extremely obvious at this point he and his publisher lied to everyone about all the books being finished. They knew that people who like fantasy have a "Martin Rule" (Do not buy a series of books until they are done) and they just lied and said they were done, but needed some "tweaking". They will never be done..just like with Martin. That is what makes me so mad..it is not that it just has taken unreasonably long for him to release the darn book, but they lied about it being done to get people to buy the first two. Most authors have more class than that. You do not lie to your audience, especially in the book world.
I found my son reading the book at Thanksgiving. Told me it had been recommended as a great book. I just had to agree, but also tell him the second book was quite inferior and the third one didn’t seem like it would ever be published. I’ve put the series behind me.
I didn't like the first book enough to want to read the second one. It was was just ok, starting off really slow, and ending slow. The middle was the best part, but it didn't make me want to continue reading the series.
I thought the second book was too terrible to finish and am not going to touch the third, but really, knowing that he values spending time with his kids/family and fundraising for charity over endlessly sweating over a slowly going creative endeavor mostly makes me think higher of him. I really don't think his 'work ethic' is to blame there, though you are probably correct in saying his current and future publishers aren't too thrilled about working with him.
Sounds like Rothfuss has a case of Martin-itis. LOL. At this point, I see Game of Thrones, the television show, as story canon, and have forgotten most of the details of the books that inspired it.
As for Rothfuss's series, I found the first book overwritten and was never compelled to continue on. My guess is that Rothfuss, like Martin, expended all his creative energy on the first book(s), and has subsequently lost interest in the the world he created.
Well, the thing with Martin is that he has crippling anxiety, which causes him freak out and get really bad writer's block because he's so terrified of effing it up. I don't imagine I'd do very well under as much pressure as he must be under either. And he does write other books/shorts/TV episodes/other things between ASoIaF books. Rothfuss doesn't have that excuse. He spends his time very visibly video gaming, wasting hours a day on social media, and a whole slew of other things, and has put out one small novella to show for all the time that has passed. I'd take Martin over Rothfuss any day. Martin actually publishes things between volumes of his flagship series.
Um. I think the first two books were wonderful. And does it kind of suck that we have to wait so long for the 3rd? If course! But A: Do we want him to release it in imperfect form? No. And B: We can always read other books while we wait, and then begin at the beginning once more when the third book IS released. I would try and say let's be patient, but I'm sure most of you would respond with something along the lines of, "We HAVE been patient!" And sure, many of you would be right. But patience doesn't just end - that's kind of the whole point of the definition. Sometimes you have to wait - deal with it. They're fantastic books so far, but waiting, even if it ends up being a few more years, won't kill us. We don't have to be happy about it, and im certainly not. But we also don't have to come on a website and endless converse about it in a manner that, to me, seems to simply be a while lot of whining and complaining. I read constantly, almost all fantasy/sci-fi. I DEFINITELY wish that The Doors of Stone had been released by now. But as Gloria Gaynor put it, I will survive! Sheesh guys.
It's not so much the waiting as the very high profile everything but actually working on the book that the author is doing that annoys me. And really, asking people to donate money while Twitch streaming to get him to go write for a few hours? That's a man that doesn't give a shit about his fans, and certainly doesn't deserve them, right there. I enjoyed the first book, but I absolutely HATED the second one. I probably wouldn't have picked up the third one even it it had been promptly released, to be perfectly honest. But I've also now had seven years to look back on it, and that sentiment has only gotten stronger with age. I find that I just don't care, and probably never should have to begin with. He can do all his shit, and maybe get the book out in 7 more years, and I'm sure people will love it. Me, I don't care anymore, and won't be supporting his writing career ever again.
That's a lot of rage. I can't really disagree with your opinion of Rothfuss, but I think you overestimate the ratio of heavily-invested fans who write angry blog posts to ordinary book buyers. When book three finally comes out, it will be massively hyped and a best-seller.
(And I'll read it. Because it has to be better than book two.)
honestly the only reason your sour is cause you had to wait if he'd already released the book you'd be fine with it. ART Takes Time!
Dude, the guy has to give closure to the story of Kvothe, what led him from the bright minded, intelligent, powerful 16 year old Kvothe to the powerless, depressed Kote. And explain everything that happens in between, all that under a lot of pressure. I do agree that Patrick has taken an excessibly long time and I do not blame you for being angry, but I can't help but to understand patrick, as I have tried to write a book. I barely got through a thousand words before I gave up. It must have been, what, 4 pages long? He writes thousands and thousands of pages. He should focus more on the book rather than his livestreams though, but I really can't be mad at him-
Anna wrote: "honestly the only reason your sour is cause you had to wait if he'd already released the book you'd be fine with it. ART Takes Time!"
I wrote my review of the second book a week before the book was released.
That was nearly 7 years ago.
I didn't care to read the final book then.
Had the final book already been released at the time, I would not have read it.
If it came out a year later. I wouldn't have read it.
if it came out today, I wouldn't read it.
If Rothfuss writes any other books afterward, I'm not going to read those.
I disliked the second book THAT MUCH. It has nothing to do with the wait between books. It has to do with it being a vapid, vacuous, pretentious pile of human excrement, that the author tried to pass off as a book. I have read very few books in my life that displeased me more than this one. All the author had to do was not fuck it up. But he drank his own kool-aid, inflated his ego to the point that it won't fit into most buildings, and here we are.
I'm never picking up another thing written by Patrick Rothfuss, that includes the novella, though I have heard from others about it.
Eric: I seen in your review that WOT was your favourite series ... this is my ultimate favourite as well (re-red whole series 3 times now) I’ve read lots of other fantasy novels but seem to put them down after 1 or 2 books, nothing sucks me in like Jordan’s world ... can you recommend anything?
It may very well be finished.. I believe all of Martin's are done too. You see, everyone wants to know how they end... publish the books, give an ending not quite as the fans would like it, and *poof* no one watches the very expensive tv show anymore.
There's NO guilt showing with either author; lots of time spent on sports viewing or video games, or puffing up of chests when non-profits are pulled out as accomplishments (when there are thousands of people in place to do such things; and "raising a family"? (Many authors happen to produce children while still working; it's not hard really.)
I'd not thought of the "scam artist" angle, but sadly, I can clearly see where that concept works.
It's a shame really. I liked both series. (Though ASo
IaF is just overwritten by a lot. Battles lasting hundreds of pages? Spare me. I too am seeing the show as canon. It's trimmed down, tightened (mostly), better done.)
I read about 200 books every year. Of different genres too. So many good works are produced. Annually. By many authors. I buy ~their books. Stephenson, Tad Williams, (I'm not a WoT fan, sorry); even Scott Lynch, who has crippling depression and went thru a rough divorce, managed to put out three (or 4?) excellent, lloong novels, that still read well if the Series isn't continued.
Great, honest, review.
Please, Rothfuss, at least finish (or publish) that last book. Do the honorable thing.
Just to mention, it's not a given (from my view, by far) that the book will be finished at all that is, in a book form. It may just wrap up quietly by season 3 of the series. I think three seasons is still more likely but two is a possibility too, depending on the ratings
After the fantastic train wreck that was the 2nd book, don't think anyone with their right mind would invest the time to read another thousand pages of utter bollocks. I very much wonder what his target audience is, because it certainly isn't men. Or women. As to his claim that the trilogy is written in advance, and he's just editing, sure...
"The longest I ever had to wait for a Wheel of Time book, was five years, and that was because the author freaking died." LOLLL. I agree - I'm so pissed about this. In fact, I should really change my profile pic.
I gotta say was a big fan of pat but didn't even know about most the stuff you guys were saying but even still I completely forgot about this series lol not buying it and the books were too long to go back and reread e especially with all the budding new Authors on every single website out there including RoyalRoadl fictionpress and plenty of other translation sites that now have original novels thanks but I am with the original creator of this post no longer a fan
I'm actually optimistic it will be published within the next decade... we have a title after all. As to why it isn't out when it has been written already? I was watching a youtube interview with Sanderson and the powder mage guy, and they both agree that revisions are a necessary but (most of the time) unenjoyable part of the writing process... so he's probably just really doesn't like doing revisions.
Could be, but, I mean, 8 years on just revisions? That's more than a little excessive. I know all about the chore revisions can be, but sometimes you really do just have to say to yourself, all right, all this shit I've been doing to put this off needs to get put on hold while I get my ass to work.
yes, I wasn't being totally serious - just trying to come up with reasons for how it could be finished but not ready for publication :)
for me it is not as big a deal as for others since I only just read the books for the first time a year and a half ago.
So funny seeing people bitch on about whether a book will come out or not. Plenty of other fish out in the sea to read before then.
Okay, so i created this account specifically to reply to this bullshit review. I get it, you're tired of waiting, everyone is tired of waiting. But, if you would've done some research you would've found that the reason this book is taking so long is because of Rothfuss's experience from writing thr second book. He said in one of his blog posts that he was under so much stress to get the second book done and through revisions that it's all he ever did. this led him into a downward spiral and into really bad depression, the third book is taking so long because he first had to recover from the experience of writing the second book, and he's taking more time to himself while doing this book so that he doesnt go into the same downward spiral he got into the second book. Now, I'm only 17 so I'm sure a lot of you older readers will disregard my comment as being uneducated or uninformed, but since I fell in love with reading over 10 years ago, I've probably read easily over 100 books and these are easily the best books I've ever read. I've read books from Stephen King, Dan Brown, George R. R. Martin, and many others that i cant immediately recall. The only person that even come close to the level of imagery and depth that Rothfuss puts into his books is Martin. So with all due respect; back off and let this man live his life
I'm not tired of waiting. I wouldn't have picked up the third book if it came out a week after the second one. I hated the second one that much. I plan never to read it, I just don't care anymore, and I haven't since I finished book 2.
As for the rest, I made this post, because I felt that he needed to be called out on his shit. I don't give a shit if the book ever comes out, but there are a lot of people who do. And taking 9 years to edit a book that was supposedly already written is excessive even by fantasy author standards. If that was all, I wouldn't be so angry at the man, but it's not. He's a con artist. He's been extorting money from fans to go work on the book rather than continue playing video games. He's been making every excuse under the sun for not getting to work, while also very visibly doing everything he possibly can other than working. He needs side projects, fine. I don't fault him on that. He needs a hobby or two, so does everyone else. But I draw the line at extorting money from his fans and holding the fucking book hostage, even if I have no interest in reading it myself. He also has a bit of a reputation of being an absolute asshole to fans in person when he makes appearances, with an attitude of supreme, pompous superiority over them, and often gets viciously angry when anyone says anything to him that's not praise. Back in the day when I was working as a professional critic I had the opportunity to interview him in person for the magazine that I worked for at the time. It was just before the release of The Wise Man's Fear, and I had just finished reading an ARC of it, and was somewhat less than impressed. When he found that I didn't really care for the book, he became very hostile toward me, and my coworker who was also participating in the interview. We said nothing offensive to him about it, as we were trying to be professional, all we said was that, eh, it wasn't as good as the first book, and we didn't really care for it. He then started a fucking vendetta against me which ended with my personal website being taken down because he claimed that my review of his book violated his copyright, which cost me a large portion of ad revenue. The man is a piece of shit, and anyone that tells me otherwise can go straight to hell.
I'm a 100% with you on this Eric... I couldn't not believe that he did really held the book hostage for an auction vs playing fallout4 until i read it in his blog... I just couldn't believe somebody would actually do that to his fans ??? He just admit that he can work on the book but nah.. let's auction this shit up and milk more money.. And then, according to a fan who was following tis shit, when he saw that ppl put money so he actually work on the book, he simply change the poll... just WOW !!! So yeah, 100% agree with you Eric and it would be much much better if ppl who are deep in his ass that they can smell his shit quit bothering ppl who know him for what he is... and simply stating solid facts.
I have a theory... he's taking his time because he knows this is his last book. That he won't be able to come up with a series like that again. Or at least no more than the first book of one lol
p.s. wonder if the aug 2020 amazon /book depo listed date is real
I had the same theory/idea... The guy said he tricked us as Kvothe's tale is only a prologue to a much bigger story.. That's great news :) BUT, if we have to wait 13 years and counting for 3 books, i wonder how much time we will wait for this Saga ? how many books will it be ? Does he have ideas for his story, did he already have something written for it ??
So yes Michael, i agree with you that i sincery believe that Kvothe's tale will be his last... At the very least for me, because even if he annouce that he'll start another series based on Kvothe's world, who in his right mind will/would embark in another decade of waiting, swallowing lies...etc and no communication from the author.. I certainly would not !!!
Marouane wrote: "I had the same theory/idea... The guy said he tricked us as Kvothe's tale is only a prologue to a much bigger story.. That's great news :) BUT, if we have to wait 13 years and counting for 3 books,..."
true but as some have pointed out, he might be having problems trying to tie everything together... I'm thinking there might be 2 kinds of authors - ones that are great at planning (think Sanderson, you only have to watch his writing class videos on YouTube to see this guy is keenly aware how to write a book) vs the ones that get bogged down as their story increases in scope. Possibly they are not as great at planning and rather use trial and error as a writing method. I mean I know all authors revise to some degree but you know what I mean, it's easier with a plan.
So maybe Rothfuss would actually produce the first book of a new series in a relatively timely (for him) fashion, not having to worry about tying everything together yet. Pure speculation on my part of course... just a thought.
“To my mother who taught me to love books and opened the door to Narnia, Pern, and Middle Earth.
To my father who taught me that if I’m going to do something; I should take my time and do it right.”
The first words given to us by Rothfuss. We don’t know how long it took to write and publish the first two books. We just know when that part was done. I will wait for it to be perfect. I just discover led these books and I already miss them.

I know all about the chore revisions can be, but sometimes you really do just have to say to yourself, all right, all this shit I've been doing to put this off needs to get put on hold while I get my ass to work.
yes, I wasn't being totally serious - just trying to come up with reasons for how it could be finished but not ready for publication :)for me it is not as big a deal as for others since I only just read the books for the first time a year and a half ago.
I plan never to read it, I just don't care anymore, and I haven't since I finished book 2.As for the rest, I made this post, because I felt that he needed to be called out on his shit.
Or at least no more than the first book of one lolp.s. wonder if the aug 2020 amazon /book depo listed date is real
I had the same theory/idea... The guy said he tricked us as Kvothe's tale is only a prologue to a much bigger story.. That's great news :) BUT, if we have to wait 13 years and counting for 3 books, i wonder how much time we will wait for this Saga ? how many books will it be ? Does he have ideas for his story, did he already have something written for it ??So yes Michael, i agree with you that i sincery believe that Kvothe's tale will be his last... At the very least for me, because even if he annouce that he'll start another series based on Kvothe's world, who in his right mind will/would embark in another decade of waiting, swallowing lies...etc and no communication from the author.. I certainly would not !!!
