Thank you, 100% how I felt about the book. I spent like the first half of the book screaming at Ashley "FINISH READING THE BOOKS FIRST" until I gave up lol I even forgot to put it in my own review
You nailed it!!! I had such high hopes for this book but it totally fell flat. I agree with every word you wrote in this review.
Carolina- yes the way I couldn’t FATHOM why she didn’t just finish these books?!? I literally started thinking that I HAD TO have missed some reason she couldn’t finish them lol, like maybe they were being delivered one chapter at a time😂
Amanda- glad to know someone read every word because this was quite an impassioned rant🙃
The Hemi part makes me laugh, because I thought I was just being negative, but I felt the same way. Especially when they reunite in the end and she still calls him that, I just couldn't take it seriously. "Hem" would have been much better.
I’m at the halfway point and I just cannot finish it for all the reasons you spelled out. Ashlyn is such an annoying character and their story does not convince me that they were ride-or-die madly in love with each other. In fact, most of their story pointed out that they were ill suited for each other. Anyways, I’m glad I read your review because now I can just shelve this one and find a different read.

I got turned off on like page 10 when she finds a copy of The Remains of the Day….which was published in 1989. Ashlyn doesn’t have the internet but the author does

Thank God someone else found Ashlyn repeatedly calling her love interest (apparently he didn't have a very memorable name) after him explicitly telling her not to a little stalker-y.

Thank you, I agree with your perspectives. Except for one ... I do not think this book is well written. The language is plodding and repetitious, the dialog is stilted and some phrases just made me cringe.
OMG all of this! The slow reading drove me absolutely insane and I spent the last 3/4 of the book yelling "the letter was switched" in my head. uuuuugghhhhh I don't know why people liked this so much.
Perfect summary. I wish I would've read your review before reading and saved myself the time, lol! I was so bored!

Hi there, I just saw your review and skimmed through the responses to see if anyone has recommended other books with “echoes” to the touch. First that comes to mind with a similar concept is The Little Shop of Found Things by Paula Brackston, only the MC there has connections with antiques, not just books. That’s book 1 in The Found Things Series, they have been around for a few years so may have read them already.
Another one is The Book Charmer by Karen Hawkins, also a series. You may enjoy these if you haven’t read them already.
As for The Echo of Old Books, I am still reading it but wanted to see if anyone else notices how many times “suddenly” is used. It’s a bit excessive for my taste. 😊

Nailed it. The other thing that pissed me off is Ethan's light switch from thinking she's a creepy weirdo and brushing her off to falling in love with her in like one line. Unbelievable.
This review is amazing but my favorite point is the one about how it took soooo long to read novellas.

I agree with all these points. I would add that the dialogue between Ashlyn and Ethan was so forced and awkward so that we had a plot line for them that it was painful at times. Also it seems Ashlyn was struggling with her own demons and broken until she all of a sudden wasn't and so she could help Belle finally be able to forgive. It wasn’t believable.
Spot on. Not even going to bother writing my review now because this is exactly it. This should have been two books - one with Ashlyn and Ethan (with like ten times more chemistry tho) and her ability to feel books emotions and then one with Belle and Hemi. Mixing these things together was fully unnecessary and I honestly feel that is an editors error more than an authors, as I agree she clearly was just passionate about her ideas and couldn’t see the best path forward.

About half way through I couldn’t take it anymore so I jumped to the end. I could not connect with this book, you captured all the things I disliked perfectly. Thank you!

I've just finished reading and I needed to know that someone felt as frustrated as me. Your review perfectly encapsulates my thoughts and feelings about this book.
I agree with almost everything you said! Ashlyn and Ethan had zero chemistry and her “gift” was quite literally irrelevant.
Also I realize this review is over a year old now, but try reading The Book of Doors! Not the same concept, but very good if you like “magic” and books together!
I wish I had read this review before reading the book. I also thought it started strong premise and went sideways. The dialogue was awful. The characters are all incredibly immature well into their 60’s. It took sheer will to finish this book and it got worse not better.
Yep. Pretty much everything you wrote is spot on. I also really wanted to like this book, but I couldn't. It's like the author had an idea for the core story and then somehow all these other irrelevant narrative subplots got tacked on around it. This book could have been half as long and a better read (for fans of romance anyway) had it just focused on the two main characters and dropped the extraneous modern-day Ashlyn storyline.
I came here looking for this review! I wanted to scream at Ashlyn for not reading the damn books, it made no sense! Also the sister switching the notes was so obvious, I can't believe it took them more than 40 years to find out lol
