Favorite Things About Persuasion > Likes and Comments

I just finished Persuasion, and seeing as it's my favorite of Jane Austen's completed novels, there are several aspects to the story that I absolutely adore 💕

Rather than gush any more myself, I want to pass the mic to the rest of you and ask what your favorite things about the story are!!

I love that Anne is loved and respected by many. Even though her family is awful, she knows her worth because everyone else can see it. Also, she has a lot of growth before the novel. We do not witness it but we know it is there. In that way she is no different than Elizabeth, Catherine, Emma, or Marianne.

I’m perking up my ears over part of your comment—that it’s your favorite of her completed novels. Do you love an unfinished work of hers even more? Asking as a Watsons megafan.

My favourite passage in Persuasion is when Anne stands up to her father and insists she will spend the evening with her friend, Mrs Smith, rather than their titled relatives. The poor man is so deliciously horrified and Jane Austen brings such humour into the scene with her writing.

What sets Persuasion apart from her other novels is that it is the most grown-up/mature of the stories. Anne uses her head and her heart - and she does not apologize for her decision to end the relationship because her reasoning was sound. She gets knocked down a few times but never wallows. Persuasion is the ultimate second chance romance.

Yes!! I love Austen's skill with little interactions like that. Her father is horrible, but he's so silly and vain that his part in the novel is almost comic relief 😂

YES!! I feel like this fact is also what sets her apart from Fanny Price, who suffers from much lower self-esteem due to not having quite so many people in her corner. (I love them both, but I think I relate to Anne more because of her self-assurance).

It never fails to make me swoon 💕 As a firm believer in there being a time for everything (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8), Anne's standing firm in her decision solidifies that notion that if it's meant to be, it will happen at just the right time (and this applies to far more than romance; God will use our misfortunes to fully prepare us to move into our blessings!! ✝️)

If the latter is not your personal interpretation of things, that's totally alright; but part of the reason I like Jane Austen's heroines so much is due to their having similar values to my own 🫶
