Wonderful review, Bonnie G! I especially appreciate your calling out the FMC’s questionable behavior but choosing to overlook it to some extent.

Thanks, Gloria. Have you read the earlier books by the author?

I’ve never read anything by this author, although I know I have one or titles by her on my TBR. Do you have a rec?

I liked Business or Pleasure a lot, but it is also the one with the most sex on the page, so not for everyone.
Excellent review, Bonnie. I appreciate your honesty in examining the portrayal of Ramona, the way the author "wrote herself into a hole," and your own dilemma in whether to just take Ramona as she is. (Not to mention the icky issue of a teacher-student affair.)

Thanks, Fran. When I was in college, many of us hooked up with faculty. As you know, I work in academia, and a very high percentage of older male profs I know (60 and over) are married to former students, though most often they were grad students when the relationships started. Romance with undergrads is verboten now, and discouraged with grad students. I can tell you the grad-student-prof thing still happens a fair bit. I suspect it still goes on in the undergrad context, but I have no hard evidence. In this case the student returned to school in her late 20's. This was not an 18-year-old. I did not find it icky, apart from her actually being in his class when the relationship started. That was super problematic. I know other readers felt differently from me. I can forgive a lot in the name of love. I am a softy deep down.
Great review, Bonnie! The topic is very complex, because it's about power, and power difference, and not about love. I agree that banning such relationships achieves very little and, in many cases, can lead to suffering and injustice, but it is very difficult to find a fair and workable approach.
