Amelia is a sorceress in hiding, scraping together enough gold to get out of the kingdom. Then the resistance hands her the most wanted child in the country, and carrying him north is the price of her own escape. She travels through enemy-held country, with an Inquisition captain on her trail and magic that answers to her feelings instead of her will. She doesn't do heroics, she doesn't do hope. The boy won't stop trusting her.
Dark fantasy with a warm centre rather than grimdark. Bleak in places, but there's someone worth rooting for. Tropes: reluctant guardian, morally grey protagonist, found family under duress, magic with a temper.
