Amelia Delarue survived by being nobody. A sorceress in hiding, scraping together enough gold to buy her way out of a kingdom that would put her on the next pyre. She has Chloé — a would-be knight with more honour than sense — and a promise she means to keep. She has a plan. She does not need complications.
Then the resistance puts the most wanted child in Tourain into her hands.
Carry him north and the road out of the capital opens. Refuse and she doesn't leave at all.
So she runs him through enemy-held country with an Inquisition captain on their trail and magic that answers to her feelings instead of her will. Every time she loses control of herself, she loses control of it.
Amelia doesn't do heroics. She doesn't do hope. But the boy won't stop talking, and he won't stop trusting her.
Walking away was supposed to be easy.
Dark fantasy with a warm centre rather than grimdark — bleak in places, but there's someone worth rooting for. Tropes: reluctant guardian, morally grey protagonist, found family under duress, a righteous and genuinely convinced Inquisition, magic with a temper.
