Too bad she couldn’t tie it all together.
I read another review of this that said basically the same as you. It's unfortunate because the subject matter sounds so interesting. I know nothing about this either but think I too would be better off reading an NF book about it. Sorry you didn't enjoy it more, Lisa.

Meanwhile, the short documentaries on See's website are great.

Although it took me 2 tries to finish this, it was so full of fascinating history I knew nothing about that I gave it 5 stars - but I totally understand you thinking it was a slog. It surely was in places, but ultimately I loved it.

I agree. I am only a couple of chapters in but oh my god the clunky explanations in every sentence! No one speaks this way! Definitely should have been a non-fiction passion project for the author. She clearly has done the work, but the story is just there as an excuse for an endless stream of factoids.
