I enjoyed this a great deal - Hope you do, too!
Oh, boo. I'm sorry to see you're finding it boring. I was looking forward to it, but yeah, don't really have time for boring books...I hope it picks up for you, Anne!
Maybe it's just not my kind of book? Or maybe I'm just not far enough into it yet?
It gets a little long winded, but the overall story (when it finally ramps up) is pretty good!
I absolutely LOVE Geneva Rose on Instagram, I find her to be an absolute deadpan delight.
And that's why I will never be able to read one of her books. I don't want to not like what she's produced and each one sounds like something I would not like.
Reviews like this make me feel justified in my decision. Thank you.

Honestly, I felt bad even writing this. I don't know her from anything but her afterword and thanks to everyone was so sweet. She came across as a genuinely awesome person. If this is a good example of what she writes, though?
It's not for me. I'm not the majority, so I'm sure she'll have lots of continued success.
So what you're left with is a story about a bunch of "sad, fucked up people spinning their wheels and whining about their shitty lives."

Yup. But there's a real market for those kinds of books, so who am I to argue? lol
And sometimes that's ok! Because if the mystery is kind of secondary to a great cast of characters, I'm still there for it. This just...idk. It's not my type of mystery maybe?

My age immediately turns me to a shine seeking magpie when I see any VHS/cassette tape/video-game-systems-that-required-you-to-blow-on-the-cartridge-and-in-the-systems-to-get-them-to-work type of cover, so I was definitely eyeing this one. Glad to know this probably isn't worth the time (unless I'm looking for sad, fucked up people whining about their shitty lives of course...🤔), and I can pass. Appreciate the honest reviews!

So I from page twenty I had it pegged as Michael before even getting to know all the characters. I think the writer had a Freudian slip because at the end of chapter one it ends with the mother’s quote “don’t trust…” and the very next chapter is titled Michael. Now that could be coincidence but immediate alarm bells went off in my head
Oh wow! I was listening to the audiobook, so I didn't even notice that. But yeah. The motivations for everything just pointed in one direction.
Also, I'm a bit over seeing things like "don't trust...gak!*dies*" in books. Especially in this case. Lady, you've been dying for a long time, and you JUST NOW decide to croak out a warning to the child who has spent months taking care of you?

Ex-Actly. I love trying to ferret out whodunnit and I love to pat myself on the back when I'm right, but I also love when an author snatches my glory away at the last minute and makes me gasp! because they had me fooled.

Omigosh THANK YOU!! I was struggling at 34% fighting not put it down as another dnf but, I had to find out if the story goes the way I thought and needed to find some spoilers and you did not disappoint!! Now I don't have to endure finishing this one!

I bought this one when the reviews were higher and the book had just come out… and now it appears the ratings have dropped (I hate when that happens, it’s always a gamble when a novel first comes out) and the people whose reviews I trust (yours, among others - maybe not for ALL the books we have both read, but for a large chunk of them, were usually rating a book around the same- give or take a star) have rated it 2 or 3 stars.
Since it is so short, I think I should still give it a read though? Ugh. Decisions, decisions

If you've already bought it, why not? You can always drop it if it doesn't grab you.
The male narrator also narrated The Bromance Bookclub, and I knew I recognized that dude-bro voice ever time Michael's coasters came on.

Thank you for the spoilers (legitimately). I gave up at 30% and you just saved me so many hours of time. Having the brothers POV at the start was a terrible idea because you IMMEDIATELY know he's an absolute douchebag and a real piece of trash so, yeah, I basically guessed who the mum said "not to trust" at! 30%. Which is kind of a problem with a thriller.

That’s pretty low—mocking addicts like it’s some quirky punchline. Crazy addict shenanigans? Horrible. Clearly, you’ve never had to watch someone fight through that kind of struggle. Whatever credibility you were aiming for in your review just evaporated with that thoughtless jab.

@jim Garfield was the neighbor falsely framed. When the mother visited and brought casseroles she mentioned how Garfield and friends was on the tv and he stopped to watch it as they went through the house.
Yeah, I feel like the only people who didn't see this coming are the ones that didn't ask themselves why a parent / mother would cover up a murder. Once you ask that question, it's painfully obvious and the whole thing is so incredibly dull.
I must be dumb because I didn't predict whodunit.
