I thought I lost this review, so I wrote another one:
Seven by John D McDonald
This is my favorite type of book: a crumbling paperback, which literally falls into pieces as you read it – found in a book exchange in Kensington (the community in Brooklyn). All the stories seem to take place in dingy offices in midtown Manhattan in the 1950s (though the copyright is 1971).
I see now that four of the stories appeared in Playboy!
And right on the title page is a beautiful little stamped poem:
Paperbacks 35 cents 3 for $1. 00 2 for 1 trades 25,000 to choose from galaxy of books 1908 Sheridan Rd., Zion, IL we mail anywhere
These are seven short stories. "Woodchuck" is an evil primer on how to seduce a married woman – who is gorgeous – then convince her it was her idea, and get her to have sex with you again, so that she's so ashamed she'll never tell her husband. Never read it!
