oh no, im not sure how ill feel about the narrator breaking the fourth wall. and it is disappointing to hear that the epilogue gives away the twist from the silent patient! incredible review as always emily!
I didn't like his other books so I don't think I'll bother with this one. Thank you for another great review!
I agree with everything you wrote here. I just could not care about the narrator or any of the characters, despite the majority of the book being the back story of our narrator. I was hoping for an isolated location/locked room mystery but unfortunately it only felt like that for a tiny bit of the story and there was zero suspense or sense of urgency for the majority of it =(
I’m really confused by the epilogue. Maybe you can help me understand? I see the spoiler for silent patient which I already read but I don’t understand the meaning to him finding Barbara’s notebooks? What’s that supposed to mean?
I'm just starting to listen to this and I'm not enjoying the narrator at all. I'm hoping it gets better, but now after seeing your review, I wonder if I should just give up.
I'm totally convinced that he might be spoiling the silent patient in each book, but I want someone to confirm my theory that each of his subsequent books is going to be the story of another asylum patient
This very accurately describes what my own issues were with this book. I did still like it overall, but compared to his other two books, it's messy and disorganized.

How far did you get? (view spoiler)
Completely agree. I also mentioned this in my review. There is just simply no way that Elliot knows everything that happened, and his excuse that he “gathered the stories” is completely shattered when we realize that the people hate him and he is in jail. I have no idea how he had a clue what the others were doing or saying during certain times, especially knowing that no one there actually liked him. He talks like he’s on social media, and is so uninteresting.
Thanks for saying what I've been thinking Not one character was 'on stage' but were off in the green room napping.
Exactly how I felt!!!! It was such a slow burn and then as soon as the third act started I felt like everything was being thrown at us. The second twist was absolutely not necessary and so dumb. I immediately lost interest after that. Not his best book.
I keep seeing rave reviews and I can't understand why! I think I hate this one more by the day. This will probably be my most disappointing read of 2024 and it's only January.
Gawd yes! Exactly how I felt! The narration felt too obvious. Absolutely hated it. I felt like everyone’s stories were incomplete.
Silent patient was so much better- I agree with every comment you made. Not impressed at all by this book
This is as how I felt. Meh. Especially considering how much I loved the Silent Patient. Just boring without payoff. Messy is a great word for it.
Elliott explains in the beginning of the book that when there are scenes he wasn’t present for he made them up. I should have just stopped reading at that point honestly. The sheer number of times he was like “but am I telling you the truth wink wink tee hee!”
Definitely not my favorite. My rating keeps dropping. I absolutely loved The Silent Patient. And yes spoilers for TSP.
That POV! Ugh. I know, there was some explanation at the end, but it still was a slog. This is a terrible book from an author whose best book was long ago.
Omg you are on point with this review. I don't even need to say it. You covered all my feeling on this book. This one hurt to finish. I just wanted it to be done with it already when reading.
Just finished my review. Hopped on and saw this review. WE WROTE THE SAME REVIEW 👏🏼 I’m glad I’m not the only one perplexed and annoyed by the constant switches in point of view. Make it make sense 😭
I agree 100% but the end I didnt care who was gonna die or be the murderer.. I just wanted the book to end hahaha
Agree with everyone else who agrees with your review - I also ‘didn’t care anymore’ and the ‘POV’ bit too… ‘what actually happened’ And this is why I came on here to find a spoiler review so I could figure it out, but it seems that NO ONE KNOWS 💩🤦🏻♀️ it took me entirely too long to read this, because I didn’t care / couldn’t follow / didn’t trust the narrator - this is the exact review I would have written, if only I was so eloquently able to 🤓
