I enjoyed the side stories so much-- unfortunately, it says a lot when a reader prefers to stay with the guy eaten during the cold open or the men operating the local snow plow than with the core cast.
@April: LoL me too, the side stories were a lot better and right to the point. That dialogue about relationships, past relationships, silly dialogue, it just didn't make much sense to me. I was bored with all that nonsense and just wanted this novel to be a bit tighter and stick to the horror. Not so much the romance part of it.
Another great review! Have you read any other titles by this author that you enjoyed more? I haven’t read any titles by this author yet.
@J: Thank you ever so much, my friend! I haven't read any other titles by her as this was my first one. I think she wrote a book called "Seed" that got a lot of rave reviews. I might check that out in the future :-)
This was a nice review. Thank you. I liked this book but do agree that if it would have had more creature horror going on it would have been better. I liked the smaller side stories but most of the characters were boring and didn’t care if they made it 😂 Btw(off topic) “Then she was gone” was pretty good.

Wonderful review LTJ! I just finished this and I agree 100% about the characters - if only we didn’t have to sit through so much petty drama and inane dialogue that’d be great😂

Thank you for this! I’m also a metal head so when I see references it makes me giddy. Right now I’m reading a fantasy book and one of the characters has been playing classic rock on their harp and I have been having fun trying to conjure up Stairway To Heaven on a harp lol as I’m also a huge Led head.

LoL Stairway to Heaven on a harp would be awesome! I love Classical music and know metal has some roots in that beautiful genre so it just works so well. LoL hence Metallica's S&M adventures.
Ania Ahlborn doesn't seem to be an author for me- I read Brother and it was okay. Her other books don't seem too inspiring. But I keep Brother on my shelf because I genuinely loved the third act, even if the rest was not up to speed.
Interesting that you enjoyed the writing style. I just finished The Devil Crept In by the same author and really struggled. It felt like I was tripping over the words, like I'd predicted what the sentence was about to say only for some extra word that had no place being there throwing me for a loop and make me have to reread the entire paragraph to recognise what she actually meant. Not sure I'll be picking up anything else by her, but great review as always LTJ 😀

@Chris: Understandable as yeah, this was a dud for me but I loved Seed, which was much better than this. I have yet to read Brother and yeah, I feel her novels can be a bit hit or miss but either way, I absolutely love her writing style. LoL she's a great author in that aspect but just needs to kick the horror up a notch :-D
@Maz: Ah, I see, I haven't read The Devil Crept In but I know exactly what you mean! I think sometimes the extra fluff added or taking the story in a non-horror direction just messes up the natural flow of a read, you know?

I agree with you, LTJ, that it had a terrific start and I liked the author’s writing style, but I cringed when I realized that the last third of the book was going to be about their attempt to find help. My hope was that the author would surprise us with a backstory of how these creatures came to be. Her writing captured this delicious sense of dread, especially when a chapter was devoted to a nearby outsider however, I scanned the last fifty pages because I didn’t need a blow by blow description of lighting homemade torches or fight scenes with the creatures. It was unbearably dull which is a shame because the author has a definite talent for creating tension. The only redeeming thing was there was no happy ending for the characters.

A good review. I agree that the horror elements were great, the character dynamics not my cup of tea. As noted in my review, I was rooting for April! An atmospheric horror nonetheless. Regards, Fellow Metallica fan.
