It's time for November nominations! We have a very loose theme for this month: something that "feels fall". This is pretty broad because a book might "feel fall" to you because it's literally set during the fall, a favorite or pivotal scene occurs during the fall, or maybe the book itself has nothing to do with fall but you tend to reread it during fall and thus it's associated in your mind. This is very open-ended and there is no "right" nomination so I'm very curious what our members will nominate!

You can not only nominate novels, but also non-fiction, poetry, plays, and short stories.

Your nominations can't have been read by the group in the past three years. You can check our bookshelf here:

You can nominate up to two works that are written by a woman and published before 1977. Please state whether or not you can lead the discussion.

Nominations will end on September 15th.

Interesting theme. The only book that comes to mind was recently read.

How about Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier?

About seven or eight months ago I noticed some months did not have a lot of nominations so I vowed to put in my two cents every month. I goggle 19th century women writers and mid-20th century women writers and made a list. I have been nominating from those lists, looking for books by these authors.

So, armed with these books and/or authors I set to goggling, "Does PD James have any books set in autumn?" Yes, but those were written later in her career. Books with a fall theme. I got a list of "classic" fall books. Some were written in the last five years, which is not classic, others were definitely classic. October Country by Ray Bradbury would be great, but it is written by a man. Halloween Party by Agatha Christie came up as well. Definitely classic, but we just read her. Some books I found were not carried by my local library system. But I did come up with some books in my "did Ms. X write any books set in autumn?"

I can lead if chosen.

Clouds of Witness by Dorothy L. Sayers

I really considered one of our faithful authors but decided to go a little more adventurous with the theme. I haven't read either of these books.

The Blood of the Vampire by Florence Marryat (1897)

Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain (1933) (World War 1 ended in November- fall that is how I am justifying this one).

I love this book. Gothic novels seem so perfect for this theme.

I would love to read Testament of Youth! And it definitely has a wistful, remembrance-of-things-gone-by mood that suits autumn.
