Londoners - and I am one by birth, though not upbringing - are often, like other inhabitants of major cities, among the most parocgial people on the planet. You ask them where they're from, and they name some obscure subdistrict like you should know exactly where that is and how to get there by Tube. I hated working there for 15 years; spot on with your description: it's Satan's Armpit (that's the polite version).
