You're blowing in my sails. Love this excellent review. It's never been a prerequisite and never will be, the world is too big to ignore, but it's comforting once in a while to stumble upon someone's literary impressions of places you know, I know precisely the feeling. :)

I read this book so long ago in college. College for me was in Los Angeles, as I was a SoCal resident at the time with parents living in SFO. Like two different countries. And then there is the East Coast! Didion's observations are sharp and her prose is clean, as you said. Love all of her writing.
Thanks for reading/reviewing this book. You brought back so many memories, especially of driving the historic U.S. Route 99 from Bakersfield up the Grapevine and the Tejon Pass to L.A. Sad that it's all gone now.
Maybe it's time for me to revisit Joan Didion!
