“For everything, there is a first time.
John is having something for the first time today.
Not THAT first time, but still… it’s something he’s never done before.
John works hard. He’s a people-pleaser in all parts of his life, including his love life. But each relationship feels shorter and more unsatisfying physically than the relationship preceding it.
Just once he’d like someone to please HIM. He certainly believes he deserves that for once in his life. Then, one day, as he’s traveling a busy street in Shoreline, Washington, looking for someone to treat him in the way he deserves, he comes across Starla. But Starla’s not the average sex worker. She’s so far beyond that John’s heart flutters just at the look of her. And when she offers him something very special, John can’t believe his good luck.
But is it really luck if it’s what he deserves for his life of hard-working obscurity? John doesn’t think so. He’s looking forward to a night of passion beyond his imagining.
And therein lies John’s problem. For the intersection of what one deserves and the imagining of another can be a very dark place.
Too bad he doesn’t realize it.”

I already picked up my copy and am looking forward to this read. Specifically I am curious to find out how Jeffrey's uniquely chilling and concise prose style translates from his dystopian Food series to a contemporary EH storyline. Frankly I am not sure why I never picked up his other unrelated works. If we were reading Agatha Christie I could quip "It's a mystery to me"! You know, Janie, Alan is back and it would be terrific to put together a Laymon read! I thought of you when I saw him chatting with Ian again.

Pisces51, I will always be ready for a Laymon read! :)

I noted that Alan has been stopping by the Discussion Boards. He is a big fan of Laymon and very knowledgable about his body of works. I could hire a PI to locate enthusiastic HAL. He likes Laymon. The dude is a speed reader though and gets wildly eclectic reading periods. There is also Rob but he, too is passionate about a number of genres. I will be thinking about it for sure!

I purchased Prime Cuts and we are going to " Buddy Read" the anthology the end of this month (the last week) on HGW (me, Ian, and Monika) + whoever may be inclined to join us. Looking forward to your story! Do you have a story in another one of their anthologies? I was focused on the theme of cannibalism and thrilled that it was available in a kindle edition. My search indicated it was only available in print and I was going to buy it anyway. So, my email program is secure as Fort Knox but doesn't "play nice" with Outlook. I have Microsoft Outlook myself but it is cluttered with business contacts.

Finished this earlier. For my thoughts; what a wild ride!! 4.5/5 for me. This shit really had me thinking especially after being on the receiving end of someone with John's mindset. Also, that hospital scene with John’s mom made my head spin 😵‍💫

Well, I finished in one day. So that means it is a real page-turner, specially me being a slow reader. I kind of liked it, although I tend not to like too short stories (not too long either).
